Plans were presented to the university Feb. 2 to invite Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly to debate University of Colorado Professor Ward Churchill during Native American Awareness Week April 5, said David Rey, university media relations specialist.
Rey said in an interview with The Easterner Feb. 22 he composed the plans in an unsigned memo called “The O’Reilly Solution,” after a national controversy erupted over Churchill’s “little Eichmanns” referrence to World Trade Center victims, and the university learned Churchill was scheduled to lecture at the Cheney campus.
EWU President Stephen Jordan decided to cancel Ward Churchill’s lecture Feb. 4 at the Board of Trustees meeting.
Jordan cited the potential threat risk to the university and its students as his reason for rescinding Churchill’s invitation to campus.
The Easterner filed a public records request Feb. 11, per RCW 42.17.310, requesting access to and a copy of all e-mails, memos, reports, purchase orders and other materials regarding Jeremy or Churchill.
This request included all e-mails, threatening and non-threatening, sent to the administration, faculty, campus police or staff offices of EWU.
The Easterner was granted access to the public records Feb. 18, however, “The O’Reilly Solution” was exempted Feb. 22.
Copies of the proposed draft were left in both stacks of public documents made available to The Easterner by the President’s Office and the university’s folders.
The Easterner reviewed “The O’Reilly Solution” memo and waited for a ruling by EWU.
However, the two-page memo was exempted under RCW 42.17.310(1)(i) from further access by The Easterner Feb. 22 by Assistant to the Vice President Roxann Dempsey who wrote Feb. 22, “Those records were the property of the University Relations department and were drafts, notes and opinions.”
Rey said that the plans were presented to the university in the Feb. 2 meeting.
“It was never really killed,” Rey said. “It just never went anywhere.”
Rey said that the memo was trying to put the best step forward on Churchill’s possible arrival.
“What we were going to do was find ways to have it be more of a discussion if Churchill was a go,” Rey said.
“The O’Reilly Solution” warns against the danger of O’Reilly’s listeners if it appeared that Churchill’s lecture would continue to be scheduled.
The memo does state that everything would be contingent on O’Reilly’s agreement to appear at EWU.
“It would have been pretty cool,” Rey said. “We only knew about Churchill for a day. It was part of the stuff we were looking at. We were trying to be open to every possible alternative available to us.”
Rey’s first contact on the Churchill lecture was an Associated Press reporter from New York Feb. 1.
Rey wrote an e-mail sent Feb. 1 to Provost Brian Levin-Stankevich, University Relations Barb Richey, Vice President of Business Mary Voves, Director of Development Phil Akers, Vice President of Student Affairs Bill Ponder and President Stephen Jordan alerting them to Churchill’s visit.
Rey wrote “I’m not sure anybody here is paid enough to deal with the crap that is gonna come along with this one. We’re going to need a good strategy for this one and we’re going to need it quickly. An AP reporter based in New York called today to ask some questions about Mr. Churchill’s visit. I’m pretty sure we are going to go national on this and looks like complete idiots for bringing him here.”
Rey wrote Feb. 2 at 8:28 a.m. an e-mail to the same correspondents, but included Associate to the President Lorrie Connelly, which read “we need a meeting ASAP. Deirdre Almeida needs to be in on this, too. I’d like to know their reasoning for inviting Churchill.”
Connelly wrote Feb. 2 at 1:31 p.m. an e-mail to the Board of Trustees which read, “We are reviewing the security implications and our ability to provide a safe environment for the speech and the campus community. We expect this may generate negative media on a national scale.”
Rey wrote Feb. 2 at 2:03 p.m. an e-mail sent to Levin-Stankevich, Richey, Voves, Akers, Ponder, Jordan and Dean of Social Work Michael Frumkin which read, “The story is now out in the wild, and the Camera’s story may hit the AP wire. We need to resolve our decision soon, as I expect tomorrow or the next day to be very busy on this front, and we’ll be better served if we made our decision, one way or the other.”
Hard to decide who is more annoying; Churchill or O'Reilly.

If Bill O’Reilly meets and debates Ward Churchill, I just hope that the debate will not be like the one that Bill O’Reilly had with M. Moore.
