Allawi Hopes to Snare Zarqawi - and Premiership in Baghdad (DEBKA)
DEBKA ^

Posted on 02/26/2005 8:57:38 AM PST by jmc1969

The Baghdad government's burgeoning optimism over the prospects of very soon collaring Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi, al Qaeda's man in Iraq, is fed from interim prime minister Iyad Allawi office.

Talib al-Dulaymi, the trusted aide aka as Abu Qutaybah, who set up Zarqawi's appointments with fellow terrorist chiefs, arranged safe houses and transport, was captured on February 20 at Anah NW of Baghdad with Ahmad Ismail al-Rawi, identified as one of Zarqawi's drivers. In custody too are Mohammed Najam Ibrahim, described as leader of an al Qaeda-affiliated cell in Baqouba and responsible for a series of beheadings, and another top Zarqawi aide, Haidar Abu Bawari.

Iraqi government security services claim to have infiltrated the terrorist network with embedded policemen.

Allawi's certainty that the Jordanian terror mastermind is almost within his grasp rests on certain events:

First, in the last two weeks, Iraqi security forces have quietly unearthed Zarqawi's principal ammunition and explosive caches, partly helped by information obtained in the interrogations of the captured terrorists. Allawi believes that many of the archterrorist's followers will turn themselves in when they see the wherewithal for fighting on and carrying out attacks is running out.

Second, Zarqawi has been sighted several times making his way through the Sunni Triangle north of Baghdad in the direction of the Iranian frontier, indicating he is on the run.

If this is true, then the guys who aranged Zarqawis travel and meetings and security etc are all busted.

Zarqawi is running away.

This would be a good thing. Especially if he runs to Iran. :)

When he is in custody, I hope we don't hear about it for an appropriate amount of time.

Allawi understandably wants to put on a good front in his bid to stay in power. But I think it is dumb to say that your embedding security forces in the insurgent camps. Just puts them in jeopardy. Today I read a Phlly Enquire article about many Shia militia groups that are forming to take revenge on the Bathists. According to the article quite a few Sunni and Bathinsts in general are being targetted. If these gangs continue to operate independent of the Iraqi Security Forces, there is just more trouble in the make. I just sense it is going to be extremely difficult to bring a government into power that will insist on rules of law and enforcement along the lines of modern western philosophy. Tribal instincts will not go away. It is part of the fabric that makes up what these peoples. And ultimately it is up to the Iraqi peoples, (mostly their government) to decide what is proper or not in line with the Islamic laws.
However, it would be great to hear that Zarqawi his henchmen, other foreign insurgents, and the main Saddam lead insurgent leaders are rounded up and tried or killed outright. Perhaps this militia's can play a key rule under the table to this effect.

On the other hand, Saying that you're embedding security forces in the insurgent camps creates an atmosphere of paranoia and distrust within their ranks, creating an environment ripe for treachery.

Disinformation. Now the enemy does not know who to trust. They can and may turn on anyone for the slightest provocation...

Exactly, if Zarqawi thinks everyone is out to get him he is apt to start killing his buddies which will turn his buddies against him.

Agree. Perhaps it is a well versed plan. Hope so.

Agree also with your statement. Perhaps it is a well thought out plan to throw the insurgency into disorder. Many of the basic don't give a shit criminals may figure it is time to stop getting easy money. Guess time will tell.

Hope your analysis is correct. Two many (one is to many) American Army and Mariness have been blown up by these bastards.

I don't think Zarqawi will be surprised hearing about government plans to infiltrate his terrorist organization. He purposefully keeps contact with only a few men because he knows that he can trust nobody. If he is forced to go outside his small circle of trusted associates he will bring on his own demise.

Is the Red Cross monitoring these interrogations? I wonder.

I think your right on with your analysis. He must keep his head out of the fray or it will get blown off. People like him only stay alive by crafty, stealth movement. Look at how long Saddam evaded detection and Binny boy still does. Snakes are great at slithering through the grass.

Whoops. Eyes getting dim. However, face it, they are not out of whack all the time. Every media has it's audience. I am sure similiar reports are being said elsewhere on this issue.
Heaven only knows how often one news group will read what another said, pass on half truths, untruths, truths etc.. Guess all we can do is sift through info and see how it applys to the over all scenario.

4. According to our intelligence and counter-terror sources, Allawi has also sent a message to Syrian president Bashar Assad with a long list of top Syrian officials, politicians and army officers who are on the take in a big way from Baathist fugitives activating the insurgency in Iraq from their safe base in the country. The name of every Syrian bribe-taker is tagged with the amount he received and the payer's identity.

WOW! If this is true Allawi deserves to be PM.
