Shame On You: The Apple iPod
Battery Replacement Problems Are Creating Problems
Feb 25, 2005 3:00 pm US/Eastern
NEW YORK (CBS) The Apple iPod is one of the most popular consumer electronic products in history. Thus far, 10 million have been sold to music lovers.
But you may be surprised to learn what happens when the battery on the iPod dies.
Our Shame On You team reports that battery replacement problems are making some people irate over the iPod. See why Arnold Diaz puts Apple in the Hall of Shame.

NOT TRUE.
Often repeated, but still--stubbornly--not true.
Nope.
Of the 4,959 songs on mine, exactly 5 were purchased from iTunes.
I'm planning to get the PC version from Dell sometime soon. Not so much to store music as talking books. I've heard good things about the Dells.
There are other makers, as well. The i-pod has an enormous advertising budget, but it's not necessarily the best choice, unless you're an Apple fanatic.
Have any of you been reading these posts. Several of us have posted sites where you can order a battery and REPLACE it yourself. You people must be microshaft brainwashed to believe all these lies about the ipod. None of this junk is true. As one other person stated it is about as hard as replacing a cordless phone batter and certainly easier than replacing RAM in a PC. Can you do that?
Why, you must be a computer scientist! You've found a way to out-smart that nefarious iPod firmware.

I think what we will see from Apple pretty soon is a replaceable battery like what is done on many digital still cameras. That way, instead of shelling out US$99 for a new iPod battery the end user can replace it for US$50 or less, buy batteries certified by Apple for the iPod.
My daughter works customer service at Best Buy. Ipod is got to be the number one customer complaint.
Has it ever occured to some of you that bash applie for making I-tunes a proprietary site has a lot to do with preventing music piracy.
I-pod provides an outlet to digitally distribute legitimate music. While nearly every other player allows pirated files to heard.
In other words... if you DON'T want your kid stealing music, buy an I-Pod.
The reason the 'lie' has been repeated so many times, it that it was true until people started to rasie crap about it. Sorry I did not read every post before replying, but these 'lies' were Apples fault in the first place.
For those who want to rent, not own their music. I love it, as soon as you stop paying the monthly fee....you lose your whole collection of music. Who's that joke on?
Napster... LOL!
" The reason the 'lie' has been repeated so many times, it that it was true until people started to rasie crap about it"
That is not a valid argument. The apple ipod is not the only electronic device that did not have third party accessories available right away. There has to be a demand for them before someone is going to invest time and money into making them available. Often it takes a good year or more for third party products to become available to the consumer when a product comes out. ipod batteries have been available for some time now.
I am not neccessarily advocating Napster, but if you want to have access to download 1000's of songs legally, it not a bad option. If you already own most of the music you like, then it obviously is not worth it. I think their advertising is a bit deceptive in that they are not upfront with how their system works, which is kind of why I posted it.
"The firmware is designed to block music from Rhapsody, Napster, Wal-Mart, Buy.com and just about every other online music store except i-tunes. The latest scheme is to sell the ipod without accessories. You have to buy the adapter separetly etc. "Think Different" seems to signify apple thinking up new ways to screw the i-pod owner. "
Where is the DOJ with the anti-trust suit (a la MSFT)?
Not related to iPod, but my Iomega Zip drive suffered "click death" as did my father's. (Eight years after the purchase, though).

I pointed you to the Apple Store to prove that claim is false. I asked if you were just passing on that false info from someone else, or if you were originating it yourself. I did not accuse you of being a liar. Telling a lie doesn't not make a person a liar. Telling a lot of lies can be a strong sign that a person is a liar.
I am now challenging you to prove your original claim. You claimed that it is no longer possible to buy an iPod and an adapter unless you buy the adapter separately. Prove it. Note that your claim was concerning an iPod, not an iPod mini. Prove it.
You are not a liar, you are just confused.
The new iPods include all of the accessories needed.
What has been discontinued is that Apple used to include both a firewire and a USB-2 cable with their iPods. They have discontinued including the firewire cable.
Since all PCs and all Macs made in the last 2 years have USB-2, the iPods work just fine. Some Mac owners are disgruntled because their machines also have firewire and they are used to using firewire with their iPods.
Years ago firewire was significantly better than USB and firewire was included with the iPods. Today, very few PCs have firewire and USB-2 is about 85% as fast as firewire (real world tests, not specs).
Therefore, they have decided to include a "universal" cable and make the firewire connector an extra cost option. No big deal.

What is the iPod Battery Replacement Program?
If your iPod requires service only because the battery's ability to hold an electrical charge has diminished, Apple will replace your iPod for a service fee of $99, plus $6.95 shipping. Be sure to follow all of the battery troubleshooting steps before submitting your iPod for battery replacement.
Apple has a lot of faults, like any other large company, but a significant amount of what is passed on in criticism of Apple is not true.
The post I replied to is another example of that. See my #56 above here.
