I agree. But we're going to see more and more genuinely unique parts in devices. They are putting chips in parts that have copyrighted codes embedded. The device is programmed to reject parts that do not have the correct copyrighted code on board.
THis is OLD news that is fixed... iPod batteries can be replaced by both Apple and third party sources... you can even do it yourself if you aren't too squeemish about popping open your case. Cost is about $30.
Does your battery
powered Sony Walkman say
not to open it?
Does your battery
powered TV remote say
not to open it?
It's bizarre design
(to say the least) to design
a battery thing
without one of those
slip off battery covers
for easy changing.
Ummm, I thought ipod downloaded in the more compressed mpeg-4 format or at least they did when I helped my nephew download songs onto his a month ago.
"I had a real problem with my upgrade to iPhoto5 though. I lost my whole library and had to reload it file by file!"
Sorry to hear about that, but remember always back up your home directory and when things like that happen it will be easier to recover from. As much as I like OS X and macs they are still man made and they can and will fail. Although with OS X the only thing I worry about is an actual hard drive failure. Panther just never crashes.
If you have ever changed the battery pack in a cordless phone, you can change the iPod battery. I've seen it done. Anyone reasonably patient can do it.
Those easy slipon covers often break and fall off. They're a nuisance.
iPods can play MP3's, AAC and AIFF formats. The new ones can play the new lossless format as well. AAC is the best choice because of small file size to audio quality. All songs purchased form the itunes music store are in AAC format. Once you burn them to a Audio CD you can then convert them from the cd to any format you want. So much for a conspiracy.
bump for later read
I work on AVIDs (PC & Mac based). In fact right now I'm in Europe editing on a PC AVID. The Mac platform AVIDs have a tendency to crash alot. (PS I edit every week somewhere in the world on someone's systems, so I've seen a lot of configurations).
Creative, Rio and I-River players don't have the same conflicts of interest as Apple as they don't have their own music store. They are cheaper and more flexible.
The reverse is true as well, I spent a lot of money downloading music from i-tunes before realizing they would not play on my Sandisk...(i-tunes is in a proprietary M4P format.)
BTW...I went with the Sandisk because it is smaller than an I-Pod shuffle and sports an FM Radio and Voice Recorder. It only holds 1Meg though.
" The Mac platform AVIDs have a tendency to crash alot."
I have never used AVID so I can not comment on that app. But I would certainly bet it is not the fault of the OS itself. I use final cut and it has been rock solid. If final cut was good enough for Lord or the Rings, it is certainly good enough for my home movie projects. I have always heard good things about AVID, however, it does use some proprietary hardware, is that correct?
Oh, and the SanDisk uses a single AAA battery that seems to last forever. I will probably buy some rechargeable AAA batteries and see how long they last...but I am in no hurry. I own a hardware store and have plenty of AAA batteries.
What are you talking about?
"the SanDisk uses a single AAA battery that seems to last forever."
Sounds like a good, simplified player.
ping
AVID requires 3D effects boards that are proprietary for heavy GFX . But, man, are they fast. However, you can get a stripped down AVID & do EFX on a third party plug in, but it's rendering is way slow..gotta go - client in room, have to edit now!!
"What are you talking about?"
oh boy. prepare yourself for a dose of hysteria, especially from the savedbygrace character here. He has a special brand of nitpicking hysteria.
Could you possibly increase your vagueness level?
</sarcasm>
This is an Apple iPod Ping... ignore it if you are Mac interest only...
If you want to be on the Mac Ping list, or off it, FreepMail me...
