I can't tell you how many things I've seen with "no user-serviceable parts inside" stamped on the case. Tain't necessarily so.
I agree. But we're going to see more and more genuinely unique parts in devices. They are putting chips in parts that have copyrighted codes embedded. The device is programmed to reject parts that do not have the correct copyrighted code on board.

If you have ever changed the battery pack in a cordless phone, you can change the iPod battery. I've seen it done. Anyone reasonably patient can do it.
