CAR-AZY PRICES
NY Post ^ | ALY SUJO

February 26, 2005 -- For a car that can go from zero to 60 in less than three seconds, the Saleen 7 is one hot set of wheels. But at a shriek-inducing $559,500, it's hardly a hot seller. The S7, which tops Forbes magazine's list of high-priced autos, is a race car that's been "tamed" for the billionaire impulse shopper.

Unfortunately, no one's biting.

They can build a vette like that Saleen

They can turn a Corvette into a mid-engine car huh?

Look a Saleen cost alot more than a Corvette and many more Corvette's are built and the dealers are world wide so what is the problem? But to say a Corvette can be built like a Saleen. Well I guess it can but the current one certainly aren't.

A Maybach was parked in front of the Cincinnatian hotel when we had dinner there last month. At first you don't give it a second glance. But when you start looking, it is awesome.

In terms of speed per dollar, the muscle cars can't be beat. Dad had a '71 Dodge Demon, 340. He ran it stock, just took off the air cleaner to street race. They would never match a Mopar with a Ford or Chevy, it was a foregone conclusion who would win. He could only find competition among the Challengers and Chargers, Roadrunners and Dusters.

No, my point is that GM could build a "0-60 in 3 sec." Vette anytime they wanted. Marketability, though, as you point out.

Yeah, it is saddles with a gas guzzler tax, has bland styling and is not selling well at all. Pontiac will probably pull the car for 2007.

Yeah, but cars these days are so far superior to those of old. I still have nostalgia for the simple, yet fast cars of the past, but they cannot hold a candle to today's sophisticated machinery.

Yup, the C5R and the C6R. They have won GTS for the last 4 years.

Well the 0 to 60 times are impressive but as you point out Corvette's and even Dodge demons can be made to do a fast 0 to 60.

The design of a Saleen or McLaren isn't to accomplish a fast 0 to 60 time. That is a byproduct of having a light, balanced (see mid-engined) car that can accelerate, turn and stop.

So while many cars can be modified to do a fast 0 to 60 time, very few can every offer the full spectrum of performance that a light mid-engined sports car can offer.

I'm glad to see they put verticle opening doors on that thing, so I can still get in it after some yahoo pulls in with his pickup truck only a foot away.

My first car was a 61 Studebaker Lark...I totalled it in 1965..wrapped it around a column under the West Side Highway in lower Manhattan...at about 3 am in the morning..trying to find the Bklyn Battery tunnel..taking three high school girls back home to Valley Stream...after imbibing far tooo many beers at a fraternity pig party..we all walked away unscathed..nary a bandaid... lucky..last time I ever drove after having even one beer..

just rereading the above..amazing how I violated 5 PC rules in one sentence, and incident..

You should take a close look at the handling characteristics of the racing class Vettes. They hang with, and often outperform, many mid-engine competitors. I'm not trying to defend Corvettes so much, but they don't deserve to be dismissed just because they're front engine. Europeans do that at their peril.
