You should take a close look at the handling characteristics of the racing class Vettes. They hang with, and often outperform, many mid-engine competitors. I'm not trying to defend Corvettes so much, but they don't deserve to be dismissed just because they're front engine. Europeans do that at their peril.
I'm not dissing anything, I think the Corvette is a great car and the best value for the dollar in the performance sports car class. And the racing class Vette's are fast and competitive. I also believe that a car should have the engine in the front and the rear wheels should drive.
But the fact is that in the racing world where money is no object Formula 1, Cart and Indy cars the proven best combination is mid-engine. If that weren't true then those cars would have a different configuration.
So while Corvette's are great and certainly not threatened by the Saleen and McLaren etc. The fact is that at a pure performance level the advantages of mid-engine design has been proven.
