February 26, 2005 -- For a car that can go from zero to 60 in less than three seconds, the Saleen 7 is one hot set of wheels. But at a shriek-inducing $559,500, it's hardly a hot seller. The S7, which tops Forbes magazine's list of high-priced autos, is a race car that's been "tamed" for the billionaire impulse shopper.

Unfortunately, no one's biting.

The styling is what kills the new GTO. A hot sports car that looks like a Grand Am? No thank you.

Many $10K motorcycles can do that. It is, however, darned fast.

Here's a real screamer, a 1968 Buick Wildcat:

My father had her up to 140 on I-95 on a family trip to Florida in 1969.

I was in china about 3 years ago on a tour... I thought I was up on cars... I saw what I thought was a knockoff mercedes, but later learned it was a Maybach. Capitalism has been alive and well over there. (and I was able to log on to FR from an internet cafe!)

I think the list price for the Carrera GT is about $440K. I used to work at a foo foo restaurant and that was one of the fancy cars that customers would show up with.

Being that it was so rare, I figured that he must have paid a lot more... one of the valets told me that he said he paid $600K for it.

Same thing happened in the 90's when Mercedes redid the SL into that wedge shape up front. People were paying 50% over the list price since they were so rare.

My buddy lives in Scottsdale AZ and says he sees a Rolls Royce Phantom ($$$$$$$$$$$$) driving around all the time... with "spinner" rims on it.

Back in the early 80s, I had a Honda 4 cyl 550 for use in NYC and it was nice knowing that even with that small bike there was nothing with four wheels that could beat me off the line.

My Kawasaki Concours, a 1000cc sport touring bike with saddle bages, a big windshield and a tour pack will do 0-60 in about 4 seconds and has a top speed of over 130mph. I paid $4,000 for it as a used bike with only 8,000 miles.

However, it isn't very good in the snow.
