A Muslim man bombarded synagogues with telephone calls for three days threatening to kill, rape and blow up Jews. 

Riaz Burahee, 25, of Edmonton, north London, who has photographs of Osama bin Laden at his home, admitted 10 offences.

Wood Green Crown Court heard Burahee told police he made the calls because he had been insulted by a Jew.

The court heard he had made as many as 92 calls, telling people to leave the building or be bombed.

Burahee, who described himself as a Muslim with strong religious beliefs, said he had no links to terrorism.

Photographs of Bin Laden and militant US civil rights activist Malcolm X were found in his room.

David Owen-Jones, prosecuting, said Burahee had made threats to bomb, threats to kill and threats to kill and rape children in March last year.

He said Burahee referred to "Hitler being right" and women who answered his calls were called "Jewish whores".

The court heard Burahee's mental state may have been affected by cannabis or alcohol abuse.

It was also suggested he may be suffering from some kind of paranoid psychotic illness.

Burahee is due to be sentenced on April 4, when psychiatric reports have been completed.

When I was a kid there were places for those who committed criminal acts and pleaded psychiatric defenses. The one near where I lived was Mattewan Institution for the criminally insane.
The corresponding place near the Stoat Cave doesn't have anything so threatening as "criminally insane" associated with it's name in any way and is noted for being a frequent source of break-outs.  Not very comforting.

My understanding is that the original legal intent of psychiatric defenses was to provide a recognition of medically documentable physiologic deformities such as a brain tumor or profound neurological birth defect that caused the brain to function incorrectly.....they weren't intended for jihadists who drink and smoke pot.

Oh I agree with that 100 percent. Unfortunately, that's probably exactly what will happen and a few years from now officials will be forced to explain why this guy was free to blow up a synagogue...and they'll probably stick with the mental illness angle.

It would be nice of course if that were to happen, but especially in Great Britain I am terribly worried that they will even be able to charge him.  They seem terribly eager to fit him into a psychiatric plea and this, in my view, creates a terribly dangerous precedent.

We are fighting an enemy who is defined by a belief system, and if we water down our antipathy toward this belief system we are cutting our own throats faster than the Islamists can.

92 seperate incidents of terroristic threats against a particular group - or even the ten that he admitted to - would have netted him 5-10 pre 9/11. I believe he'd be facing 5-10 years per incident now.

I sincerely hope that you're right, particularly in Great Britain, a country that seems to have a great problem with allowing people to even defend themselves against home invasion robberies.

I am gravely worried that they will water this down to a minimal psychiatric plea and he will be put under 'house arrest' or some such nonsense for a few months.  He will, of course, view this as 'another weakness of the infidel' and it will embolden him to actually DO something quite horrific.

I pray for the safety and the future of our British Friends.  "sigh"

Yes, it reminds me of what authorities discovered about Mohammed Atta and co. just before 9/11... they would go to strip clubs, drink heavily, tip poorly and spout off anti-Americanisms. Perhaps jihadists are allowed to do such things immediately before 'an action' ?

Yes, mental illness has to be proven first. I hope the Brits are bright enough not to fall for demands that he be pstchologically tested by a Muslim psychiatrist. A competent evaluation, given by a court appointed doctorate of psychiatry is enough.

Speaking of Muslims and mental illness, I've had Muslim clerics insist that Muslims don't suffer from mental illness, Islam is supposed to protect them from it. The verbal gymnastics you get when you ask why there are Muslim psychiatrists are interesting.
