Judge allows Schiavo's feeding tube removed in three weeks

By VICKIE CHACHERE Associated Press Writer

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- A judge gave Terri Schiavo's husband permission to remove the brain-damaged woman's feeding tube in three weeks, giving him the latest victory in his effort to carry out what he says were his wife's wishes not to be kept alive artificially.

Pinellas Circuit Court Judge George Greer issued the order two days after her parents asked the court to block their son-in-law from ordering doctors to remove the feeding tube that keeps the 41-year-old woman alive.

He had granted Terri Schiavo's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, a stay until 5 p.m. Friday. His latest order extended that stay until 1 p.m. March 18.

Greer made his decision after pleadings from the Schindlers that they need more time to pursue additional medical tests which might prove their daughter has more mental capabilities than previously thought. The Department of Children & Families was also seeking to intervene in the case. Attorneys for the Schindlers said the agency wanted a 60-day stay to investigate allegations she is being mistreated by being denied appropriate medical care and rehabilitation.

The Schindlers and their son-in-law have fought each other in court since the late 1990s on whether Terri Schiavo should live or die. The two sides have fought their battle on every level of the Florida court system, through scores of opinions and rulings and tens of thousands of pages of filings.

Friday's decision came on the 15th anniversary of her collapse when a chemical imbalance caused her heart to stop beating.

The Schindlers do not believe their daughter is in a persistent vegetative state as court-appointed doctors have ruled. Michael Schiavo says he is seeking to carry out his wife's wishes not to be kept alive artificially.

The legal family feud has taken on elements of a soap opera, with allegations that it began as a fight over more than $1 million awarded to Terri Schiavo in a medical malpractice case which her husband stood to inherit. Michael Schiavo has also been accused by his in-laws of having a conflict of interest in wanting his wife dead because he has started a new family with another woman.

The U.S. Supreme Court had declined to become involved in any aspect of the case.

Nothing like twisting a 'win' for Terri into a 'loss'.

The MSM will never get it.

"In sickness and in health, til death do us part."

I don't know why I just thought of that.

This crime in progress needs investigating. What the hell are they doing to this woman and her family per the request of the man probably responsible for her condition who has moved on with a new woman and kids! Let Terri go home with her family.

From the AP article:

Only in a pig's eye is this a victory for Michael Schiavo. The Vatican just made an appeal for Terri...

Granpa Dave [spelling?] and I have come up that AP stands for association of perverts

"Greer made his decision after pleadings from the Schindlers that they need more time to pursue additional medical tests which might prove their daughter has more mental capabilities than previously thought."

So do we start testing all retarded folks for their mental capacity, and if they fall below a certain line, they get starved?

No need for the self-righteous moaning from those who approve of this sort of thing--just a straight answer on where this line is drawn. I am seriously interested in which doctors get to decide the Line of Acceptable Personhood, and what they've decided.

Funny, he loved her before the malpractice suit!

.

I'm thinking that photo might need to start coming with a gag alert, and not because of Terri.

[The other thread got pulled. So, here you go.]

This article provides a good background of the case (including Michael Schiavo's possible motivation).

Skeptics need to be told such situations are not totally without hope.

Don't know if you all have seen this yet.
amdgmary posted it earlier:
Attorney David Gibbs visited Terri last night with the dad, Bob Schindler. Cheryl Ford wrote the following:

Terri goes Goo~Goo eyes over Attorney Gibbs

By Cheryl Ford RN

February 25, 2005

Last night at hospice Terri's father, Robert Schindler and Attorney Gibbs visited with Terri. Mr. Schindler was the first to enter Terri's room, approaching Terri on her right. As always, Terri was delighted to see her Dad until Mr. Schindler announced that Mr. Gibbs was with him.

Mr. Gibbs moved closer to Terri's left greeting her with, "Hello Terri."

Terri, hearing Mr. Gibb's deep voice immediately turned to her left to look at him. Terri's Dad stated that once she eyed Mr. Gibbs that was the end of his visit with her because she was no longer interested in anything he had to say to her..."she was goo-goo eyes over Attorney Gibbs."

Mr. Schindler then exclaimed, "Terri, Terri, look at me. I've come here to see you as well and now you cannot take your eyes off of Attorney Gibbs, what am I chopped liver?" Terri responded with laughter to her father's comment but her eyes remained focused on Mr. Gibbs.

Bob said,"Well, Cheryl that's the last time I will be taking Mr. Gibbs along with me since my daughter did not hear anything I had to say once he had her attention."

I love this. All of it, but this part bears repeating: "Terri, hearing Mr. Gibb's deep voice immediately turned to her left to look at him. "

amdgmary, if Terri is able to say "Yeah", perhaps SHE should be asked, "Terri, do you want to divorce Michael?"

Dear Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness, and please continue to keep Terri safe from man's harm and devious evil ways.

who's the bigger demon here, the husband or the judge? /rhetorical question.

the burden of proof does not belong on the parents to demonstrate the Terry Schiavo has a right to life; this is a self-evident right.

even if Terry did definitely express a desire to not be kept alive by "artificial means," that does not mean that the state is justified in denying anyone the protection of their right to life. that is why assisting suicide is a criminal act.

this entire case is an exercise in denial: the state has no interest in promoting, condoning, or facilitating the killing of an innocent person.

A state that uses its power to take the life of the weakest and most defenseless of its citizens? Does that not make the state the enemy of life? What on earth kind of state is that?

why is this even an issue?
