Americans Lose $68 Billion to Illegals

Using a new approach, Columbia University economists David Weinstein and Donald Davis estimate the net economic losses from immigration to Americans.

Unlike earlier studies, this new model does not treat the movement of immigrant labor into the country simply as a result of abundant resources and demand for labor, assumptions more appropriate to the 19th century.

Rather, the model takes into account globalization, the technological superiority of the American economy, and the resulting high standard of living.

Among the report’s findings:

-- In 2002, the net loss to U.S. natives from immigration was $68 billion.

-- This $68 billion annual loss represents a $14 billion increase just since 1998. As the size of the immigrant population has continued to increase, so has the loss.

-- The decline in wages is relative to the price of goods and services, so the study takes into account any change in consumer prices brought about by immigration.

-- The negative effect comes from increases in the supply of labor, and not the legal (or illegal) status of immigrants.

-- While natives lose from immigration, the findings show that immigrants themselves benefit substantially by coming to America.

-- Those who remain behind in their home countries also benefit from the migration of their countrymen.

Until Bush starts demanding Mexico to change their ways, absolutely nothing we do is ever going to fix the illegal immigrant problem.

Bush needs to show the Mexican government who's boss. Demand Mexico to make some pro-business and pro-job growth reforms while opening up their economy to more investment and privitization of their oil industry. And make them take their criminals back. Threaten to militarize the border if changes are not made. For a poker player, Bush does not seem like he realizes that we hold 90% of the bargaining chips.

That being said, the unemployment rate in the US is relatively low and there are plenty of jobs out there for people williing to move. We need more immigration(legal) to catch up to the EU, India, and China.

Perhaps we should send Mexico a Bill and give them a choice between taking care of their own problems, or having us do it for them.

We need illegal immigrants. In Arizona they keep us smokers supplied with liberal amounts of inexpensive black market cigarettes. With the legislature and Nanny the Governor stampeding around like prohibitionist, progressive water buffalos, waving the "Save the Chillun" banners, and behaving generally as self-annointed Jackbooted Nicotine Gestapo, the "Mexican Mafia" are courteous, reasonable businessmen. They're more honest than politicians. And more useful.

When is Mexico going to be heald accountable. For example illegal immigrants end up effecting policies of the US and than policies of Mexico due to them sending money back home.

Does anyone remember the comic book from Mexico about how to enter the US, the Mexican gov't sidestepped around that issue

Waiting for the "kneel before the altar of the free market" crowd to swoop in & tell us that there's no problem here. It's all just capitalism.

As an American, I have always been inspired by the fact that my country welcomes those who seek refuge. And as long as our government officials maintain our borders and ensure that those coming from other countries are screened in order to protect those who legally live here, the concept of welcoming immigrants is a noble one. However, something has gone awry. Indeed, illegal immigration into the U.S. has become an immense problem and a clear and present danger. Documented illegal immigration has more than doubled in the last decade. It has grown, by conservative counts, from 3.5 million in...

Contagious diseases are entering the United States because of immigrants, illegal aliens, refugees and travelers, and World Health Organization officials say the worst could be yet to come. In addition to a list of imported diseases that includes tuberculosis, sickle cell anemia, hepatitis B, measles and the potentially deadly parasitic disease Chagas, officials fear what could happen if the avian flu, which is flourishing among poultry in Southeast Asia, mutates so that it is capable of human-to-human transmission through casual contact

Oh. What a surprise.

I wonder if this includes the increased taxes plundered by government ot provide benefits to all of the illegal and legal immigrants.

Thanks for that additional information.

Our nonexistant immigration law enforcement is the result of one thing and one thing only; the greed of businessmen who continue to hire these people to undercut the market wage for labor here in the US.

Untill we start taking radical measures like we do against drug dealers, we will not see any improvement.

One thing that could be done now with laws onthe books is to use the property forfeiture laws to seize property from criminal aliens and their employers as illgotten gain, then auction it off to people who will respect the law. Meanwhile, put the laborers into work camps for 6 months each to pay off the administration costs of sending them back home and trying them in our legal system.

Dont hold your breath for this to happen until people wake up and start *demanding* action from the politicians and start single issue voting on this issue.

I am married to an immigrant lady who will take her naturalization test March 8, and so I am very familiar with the process. Believe me when I say our immigration laws are not nonexistent. That said, the laws do seem to apply only for those seeking to immigrate legally. My wife had to pay $90 for be fingerprinted 3 times, and that does not include the hundreds and hundreds of dollars we spent in other fees. Once she had to return to the INS office five times to answer one silly question. The guards at the office kept laughing over this, and actually got to know us on a first name basis.

Instead of work camps, I'd as soon see them placed in camps along the border where they can build the wall to keep them and others out in the future.

If they're going to leech off our society, we might as well reap some benefit from them in the process.

I know what you mean. Yet the observance and respect of law exists among the legal of societies only.

Criminals will not obey law no matter how severe its wording because without substantial penalty as a deterrant, those laws are worthless.

Very true.

I mean that our immigration laws are so laxly enforced, that it is much easier to not obey them, and ignore them, than it is to work in complaince with them.

Plus the illegal status gives one an actual edge with possible employment, much like H1-B visa holders, who is viewed as essentially indentured servants.

I hope you are being ironic. In case you are not, it doesn't matter whether the immigrants are legal or illegal. We have too many of them and they are destroying our culture.

while opening up their economy to more investment and privitization of their oil industry.

This is an important point. It is very difficult to invest in Mexico. No investment means no jobs. In contrast, it is very easy to invest in the US. Lots of investment means lots of jobs.
