Churchill Art Piece Called Into Question

Feb 24, 2005 8:03 pm US/Mountain BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) Boulder County resident Duke Prentup has been a fan of native American art for as long as he can remember. That love of art took him to the home of Ward Churchill in the early 1980's, where Prentup bought several pieces of Churchill's art, including a serigraph titled "Winter Attack."

"I have enjoyed them ever since immensely, they're obviously up inside my house," Prentup said.

Last month came a stunning revelation, though, as as Prentup flipped through a 1972 book called The Mystic Warriors of the Plains written and illustrated by the late artist Thomas E. Mails. He found a sketch that was strikingly similar to the Churchill piece.

I have an original Lithograph by Professor Ward Churchill. Yes it is true folks, you may not like him or think he's a little strange. But the guy is a very good artist. Before going to Colorado University Mr. Churchill was living in Illinois. I think somewhere close to the state capitol. He claimed to have affiliation to the Council of Wounded Knee. I am not a political man so I could not tell you if it's true or not. I only know he is a good artist, and one of his works hangs in the ILL. State capitol building, or at least did. This picture measures 23"x32'' [this is only the picture area] The rag matting that goes around the picture measures appx.  30"x 381/2" It is signed and dated 1981 Artist Proof. The title is Cheyennes. It was very hard to get a good picture while it was framed. There is also a picture of the companies logo that executed the work. It is in very good condition. good luck bidding. Patrick

Thanks so much. I just sent a letter to the editor quoting your source. The paper ran a retraction on a misquote of Churchill. While here in Hawaii, Churchill sold them the I'm-a-member-of-the-Keetowah-tribe tripe. I was able to give them source material to find out about his bogus race, art and academic claims.

What so amazing about Free Republic is that you never know what will be posted. Here's a thread about Ward Churchill's artwork and it becomes necessary to post a photo of Bea Arthur. I love it!
