You sound as though you have a very rational position. Show me some evidence before I believe something. I agree very much with that attitude, but I have to admit I'm inclined to think something is there for two reasons, the universe is pretty big, and I can't agree that every single sightinh is a mistake.
But for every nutbar, there's a Randi or Condon type who will stretch imagination and believability to the extreme to prove these things don't exist.

Obviously, I don't know whether or not some of the phenomena described as UFO phenomena are the result of extraterrestrially built spaceships appearing in our skies. Some might well be. But the likelihoods, as currently understood, appear to be against it. And, of course, if there are no alien extraterrestrials in our spacetime vicinity, there are a fortiori no abductions of human and animals by alien extraterrestrials.
In short, I just don't know what's going on with respect to some of the more well-attested reports of UFO sightings, and I'd like nothing better than to run across some really hard evidence which bears on the question.
