A toxic component of rocket fuel has been found in breast milk of women in 18 states and store-bought milk from various locations around the country.
The chemical, perchlorate, can impede adult metabolism and cause retardation in fetuses, among other things. It leaches into groundwater from various military facilities.
Previous studies have found perchlorate in drinking water, on lettuce, and in cows milk.
The new research, announced this week, suggests perchlorate is a bigger problem than thought, scientists said.
Texas Tech University researchers studied 36 samples of breast milk from women in 18 states and 47 samples cow's milk purchased from stores in 11 states. Every sample of breast milk contained perchlorate, as did all but one sample of dairy milk.
The highest levels were found in women from New Jersey, New Mexico, Missouri, Nebraska and California, in that order. The results are detailed in the online version of Environmental Science & Technology, a journal of the American Chemical Society. The work was led by Texas Tech biochemist Purnendu Dasgupta.
"We've got to come to grips with the perchlorate situation quickly,'' said California Senator Dianne Feinstein in a statement. "And EPA has to move quickly to set a national drinking water standard that protects the health and safety of all Americans.''

Damn! This is all the mid and high power rocket hobby needs..another excuse from the BATF to try and shut off my access to composite propellant engines.
I don't know how many of you Freepers know about it, but the National Association of Rocketry and the Tripoli Society have been engaged in a running battle with the BATF over rocket engines, specifically high power composite propellant engines. Two small, aggregate membership much less than 5000, organizations have almost fought them to a standstill. I sure wish the NRA would jump in and help us. Senator Enzi has been a great help.
I'm going to perform an immediate inspection for rocket fuel in the office across the hall RIGHT NOW! Be back in about 45 minutes......
Re: dry cleaning -- I think you are thinking of perchloroethylene.
no if only i could understand any of those terms lol (im seriously science illiterate)
I bet that freak on CSI that liked to wear diapers would go for this. Maybe he would have flown longer when he leapt from his balcony.
Are these good perchlorate's or bad perchlorate?
Like fat, cholestrol, eggs, meat, etc, etc there are both good and bad percholorates and all these studies tend to initally find all of them bad then we go to well, not all of them and then we find some good and some bad, some needed my the body and some the body simply flushes with little or no affect.
The two most dangerous poisons in the world are used everyday by people with no effect.
We call it salt...
That story will be on the bottom of page L50
If the women could lactate car fuel too, we can tell OPEC to take a hike.
OK....I'm back......a little faster than I thought...
Perchlorate can also be formed by oxidizing salt chlorates in fertilizer.
I'm sure that perchlorates in 18 states have been dumped there by NASA or the military. /sarcasm
I'd like to volunteer as the label installer!
"This is not rocket science here."
That may explain some of the diapers my daughter "prepared" when she was young. No human could do that, especially not my sweet baby girl, without ingesting some hideous chemicals.
Errr..... I won't go THERE.....
My goal in my old age retirement is to have a donkey for a pet.
Don't set your goals too high.
those babies are gonna be crawling at warp speed.
