City gets $650,000 to fight gun crime Mayor and police chief are figuring out how to use surprise funds
BY DAVID RESS TIMES-DISPATCH STAFF WRITER Feb 24, 2005
Everyone should have a rich uncle like this: Richmond's is named Sam, and he cut the city a surprise check for $650,000 yesterday to fight gun violence.
The money is from the Bush administration's "Project Safe Neighborhoods" and amounts to a little more than half the funds allocated to Paul J. McNulty, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.
"This was unsolicited," Mayor L. Douglas Wilder said. "It took us totally by surprise."

hmm gun crime. Is that when people try to ban the use of guns? it's about time someone donated a lot of money to fight those liberals. ;)
Yeah, they will use this money to get the guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens or a buy back program where they pay $200 for a $40 .25 Raven.
Isn't richmond the city the NRA was saying was stopping gun crimes by going after criminals instead of banning guns?
If you read the article, I think that is how Wilder intends to use it. Don't jump to conclusions.
Draconian sentences for gun weilding trolls is how you stop gun crime......
Are they going to buy guns for law-abiding citizens? That's about the effective way I can see to spend the money (though I'd still consider it unfair to the taxpayers who didn't get one).
He's been the mayor for 1.5 months. What were his efforts? I guess the city now has enough $$$ for that brand new baseball stadium for the Braves, AAA.
Here's my conclusion:
Wilder said he hoped the check would not be just a one-time thing, saying he wanted the city to use it for pilot programs that could draw more federal money and serve as examples for other cities.
Mo money, mo money, mo money.
It's those damn guns! They float through the air all by themselves committing crime...
Excuse me, another one of these. Before the feds ban them.
