An update from ABC News:

Feb 24, 2005 — VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope John Paul has undergone surgery to help him breathe more easily, Italian news agency AGI reported on Thursday.

AGI said surgeons at Rome's Gemelli hospital had performed a tracheotomy on the Pontiff, cutting a small opening into his neck and windpipe to allow air to flow directly into the lungs.

It said the operation lasted 30 minutes, without citing any sources. There was no immediate comment from the Vatican but Church officials said a statement was due shortly.

The 84-year-old Pope was rushed to hospital earlier on Thursday for the second time this month after suffering renewed breathing problems

Thanks for the update.
He's so frail.
It's the post surgery that'll be the toughest.

Praise be to God.

Please, let us not fight.

We, as Christians, either stand united or we'll all fall.

I was raised Presbyterian, and I am very sad. I saw him in Chicago, maybe around 1980....his soul emits, I have never forgotten being rather spellbound tho I couldn't really hear him. I hate to think of him suffering right now.

I was just giving an example to someone that didn't belive the pope personified what being a christian is all about... I didn't say that he was the only one

Your post gives the impression that His jobs is to show all us lay people how to be good christians.

In fact, being a christian personifies who Christ is. Christ lives and operates through the believer and as a believer walks in Christ, he brings Glory to Christ.

Evidently there is a small group of Freepers who come to threads like these like flies drawn to a picnic, just to show their utter lack of class and shamelessness.

Ain't that the truth!

Try reading David B. Currie's "Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Roman Catholic". It might address your concerns from your perspective. Amazon has the book.

I remember seeing him in his earlier years, playing and dancing with little children and chanting "Woop! Woop! Woop!" with the little children.

My folks live in Chicago and my mom and sister went to see the Pope when he visited. What I didn't know was that my daughterinlaw, who is a violinist, played when the Pope was there. Pretty lucky gal I am, eh?
