Danke, Amerika!
by PETER BOENISCH
A Two-Thirds-Majority will always be right.
Think again!
Two Thirds of the germans don't want to be thankful to the Americans.
So short a memory can't be permitted.
Without the Amis Berlin would be Khrushchevgrad
Without the Amis there would still be the Wall and barbed wire.
Without the Amis we'd still have the Nazis at our throats.
Without McDonald's and without Coca-Cola, we Germans could live, but life wouldn't be worth as much without the American freedom to say what you want, what you think is good or bad, what you would like to have, and having the ability to ctiticize anyone - even if it's the American, the German or the Russian president.
Without the Amis the motto for us, even for thinking would be: "ten-HUT!"
[original was Stillgestanden: means the military 'attention' , and in this case, stop what you're doing immediately, line up, shut up, and give us your undivided attention - longjack]
You Americans , are crazy dudes at times, but also damned good friends.
bild.t.online.de....Kommentar....Danke, Amerika!

"Bild" is Germany's most widely read paper, and they shocked the country by endorsing Bush in the presidential election.
"Bild" won't let me link to the page directly. Go to the home page: click Nachrichten on the left hand menu. At the Nachrichten page, the word Kommentar is on the right hand menu, just underneath the words Mehr Schlagzeilen
I don't expect any one to be peeking at the 'Girl on Page 1', BTW.
Input is graciously accepted on my translation. The briefness of the commentary gives each word quite a bit of import, and the translation may be lacking the native speaker's interpretation on some of them.

Good job on the translation.
there is always a diamond in the rough.....just like when they hated Reagan, they will come around and be fair weather friends when they are saved once again and they feel it safe to poke their heads out of the foxhole
Good job longjack ~ Thanks!
Khrushchevgrad? LOL
Thanks.

That's encouraging, though personally, I don't give a rat's fuzzy warm derriere what the Germans think of us, or any of the other Euro-wimps. Too bad for them if they have just short little memories. It's their loss.
GREAT catch, Longjack. Thanks for posting. We have friends all over, sometimes we just can't hear their voices over the Marxist catcalls of the Old Media....
Thanks for posting this longjack. I had an actual printed copy of Bild some years back and was amazed at the quality of the printing even on rough newsprint. The Germans certainly know printing and appreciate (ahem) full grown women :o) Some here don't seem to appreciate the Soldiers that Germany has on the ground in Afghanistan but it means something to me. Danke.
I thought I said no peeking ;>)

Wow..that is one zoftig gal. Is this a legitimate paper? I don't understand why they have naked girls on the website!

You're welcome.

Thanks for the column. We have a lot of friends in Europe and we got a lot of enemies here.
Excellent post, and thanks so much for the translation! I have a passel of German hotdogs....dachshunds...and they're wonderful. Also saw that heliocopter tour of Southern Germany and Bavaria on PBS last weekend. Spellbinding, and oh such lovely countryside. One terrific national trait among many that Germans possess is a talent for organization and logic. We should all be so fortunate!
Everybody must be peeking!!
No one listens to a word I say :>{
"Bild" is a daily paper that people will pick up on their way to work and read when they have breaks or pauses.
They have a good soccer / sport's section, a lot of humorous news articles, usually a novel that runs as a serial, and , of course, the 'Girl on page 1'.
"Bild" takes a slant on major news stories that will usually express what joe six-pack out on the street is thinking. "Bild" doesn't try to be something they're not.
I actually learned German by reading the sport's section and the novels in "BIld". It's written at about a fourth grade level. I don't mean that in a condescending way, either. It's a paper that you take with you to work and read parts of during the day, opposed to your main paper that you would read at home when you have an hour or so to read the news.
The German's say that if you roll the "Bild" up, blood drips out, referring to the scandals it likes to cover.
It's probably like the 'National Enquirer" and "USA Today" combined in one paper.
It has an impact, though, because readers know "Bild" doesn't pull punches on major news stories. They get to the middle of the action and call the shots as they see fit. They're Schroeder's worst nightmare. He sued them at least once, I think.

BTTT
Bump some more. Glad to see this and to know what BILD is. Wish we had more insight about the real thinking over there as opposed to the elitist stuff.
Thanks...
