New Maine House Bill Would Protect Fetuses Carrying the ‘Gay Gene’: Limbaugh ahead of the curve

AUGUSTA, Maine -– Rep. Brian Duprey (R-Hampden) has submitted a bill to the State Legislature to shield potentially homosexual fetuses from discrimination. LD 908, “An Act to Protect Homosexuals from Discrimination,” attempts to protect homosexuals from death because they might carry the gene that could lead to homosexuality.

This bill as drafted would make it a crime to abort an unborn child if that child is determined to be carrying the “homosexual gene.” Duprey said that no such genetic marker has yet been discovered. But considering rapid advancements in genetic mapping research, he wants legislation in place should such a breakthrough occur. “If the homosexual gene is ever determined to exist,” he said, “I want to ensure that a woman could not abort an unborn child simply because that child is determined to be carrying this gene.”

Duprey received the idea for this bill when listening to the Rush Limbaugh radio show. “I heard Rush saying that the day the ‘gay gene’ is determined to be real, that overnight gays would become pro-life,” Duprey said.

“Most people would agree that to kill someone just because that person might be gay would constitute a hate crime,” said Duprey. “I have heard from women who told me that if they found out that they were carrying a child with the gay gene, then they would abort. I think this is wrong. Those unborn children should be protected.”

Rep. Duprey is serving in his third term representing the towns of Hampden, Newburgh and Dixmont. He is the lead Republican on the Labor Committee.

I stand corrected and ashamed that he is associated with my party.....must be of a different breed.

You shouldn't be. Pro-life means being Pro-life. I'd like to give Duprey credit for being particularly clever, whether that was his intent or not.

This whole thing sounds like a novelty-esque waste of tax payers money. Like they don't have anything better to be discussing.

Isn't it equally possible that there is a "straight" gene if there is a "gay" gene? Shouldn't a fetus with the "straight" gene be given equal protection? I think the bill should be amended to also ban aborting a fetus having the "straight" gene, should one ever be discovered.

It's my favorite question on your list. It perfectly butts two liberal sacred cows directly against one another: freedom to choose against non-discrimination of gays.

Doncha get it? The guy is conservative but introducing a bill that plays two liberal sacred cows against each other. They have to admit either that it's okay to kill gays or that unborn children are worthy of protection.

Except that fact that a "Republican" came up with it.

You may be right.
I don't want to give Duprey credit if this is not his intention, but it could very well be.

Consider what would happen if this law passed: the precedent would be established that there exist children who, because of their innate qualities, have a right to life that completely supersedes, and criminalizes, the right to an abortion.
Thus, we have abortion on demand, because it is a woman's right, but if the child to be born is going to be gay, homosexual rights-to-life exceed and completely cancel women's rights to reproductive choice.

This will now have to be debated.
And the pro-abortion crowd will have to say that women have the right to selectively kill gay children, because abortion rights are absolute.

Of course that debate won't happen.
What will happen, instead, is a focused ad hominem campaign against Duprey.

Except that the "gay gene" doesn't exist ... but let's not let the facts get in the way.

well, the debate has been that people cannot help it - or to better phrase it - that people have no control over their sexuality. People are BORN homosexual....(ie. genetic)

the other side of the coin says that homosexuality is a choice (ie. not genetic)

This proposed bill mixes the issue with the abortion issue - and I think it does it quite effectivly....

take a peak at how the DUmmies view this issue - What groups interest is higher than the others - the Homosexual special interests' or the Pro-Choice interests'

Read the rest of the article where he explains what he's doing. He's right on with this. And based on his bio, he's got to be pretty conservative, even for Maine.

"Rep. Duprey and his wife, Carol, have five children, whom they home school."

Had to check to make sure this wasn't satire. Any other reason to kill an unborn child is OK, just not if it happens to carry the as yet undiscovered gay gene? This is the most absurd proposal I have heard in a long time.

The "gay gene" is a fiction derived to create a new class of protected citizens. Saying it is so, doesn't make it so.

There is no gene. Plain and simple.

End debate.
