Anti-smoking campaign will chide Hollywood on Oscar nightThe Associated Press
Along with red carpet arrivals at Sunday night's Oscars, television viewers worldwide may catch a glimpse of two billboard campaigns that chide Hollywood.
Los Angeles County's public health agency is paying for three mobile billboards demanding that movie makers keep smoking out of their films. The billboards will be rolling near the Kodak Theatre, site of the 77th Academy Awards.
"The whole world is watching. Keep smoking out of youth-rated movies," read the billboards, which feature a child's face.
Dartmouth University researchers recently estimated that more than half of new smokers take up the habit because they are influenced by the depiction of tobacco use in films, county public health director Dr. Jonathan Fielding said.
Fielding said he hopes the campaign will persuade the film industry to devote as much attention to tobacco use among children as it has to other health issues, such as AIDS.
"There is a real opportunity for the industry to really make a difference in this terrible epidemic of tobacco use among youth," he said.
Besides the rolling anti-smoking message, a conservative group has bought billboard space near the Kodak Theatre that takes a jab at Hollywood's political left.
Alongside a smiling President Bush, the billboards read, "4 More Years. Thank You Hollywood!" and "W. Still President. Thank you Hollywood!" The billboards, which are sponsored by a group called Citizens United, also feature mug shots of Michael Moore, George Clooney, Barbra Streisand, Martin Sheen, Whoopi Goldberg, Sean Penn, Ben Affleck and Chevy Chase.
The mission of Citizens United, according to its Web site, is to "reassert the traditional American values of limited government, freedom of enterprise, strong families, and national sovereignty and security."

I thought liberals say that movies only reflect society not affect it. So why are the same folks trying get smokes out of the movies? Have our public schools dumbed us down that much? (rhetorical question)

Are they also demanding that hollyweed keep sex out of their pictures so kids can't see that as well?
Oh, they want to show the sex. They just can't smoke tobacco afterwards(but joints are okay).
What a crock of Barbra Streisand...........the LA County Health agency isn't paying for SQUAT.............the smokers of LA county are paying for this waste of taxpayer money.
Not a single person in the movie is shown smoking a cigarette yet at the times probably 50% of the people would have been smokers.
Bottom line, it's rewriting history and it's making movies on some other reality besides the truth.
Well S#$%! I guess I better keep my smoking a@@ out of their theaters then. Bye, Bye, Hollyweird.
Wouldn't it be GREAT if they remade the old Steve McQueen film "Bullet" and put everyone on bicycles?? Helmets, elbow pads, knee pads, bottled water, and mandatory rest stops to stretch and check pulse. Little ergonomic bike seats. Perhaps a hydrdolic braking system that slows the bike down should the BIKE feel the rider was going too fast. Maybe even an AIRBAG built into the handlebars. Of course any and all moving parts would have to be safety sealed to prevent accidental injury, such as the baby in the backseat transport module sticking his little fingers in the spokes, or GOD FORBID, waving them in the smoggy air. That's it, we need little sprayer to shoot water for periodic rinsing.
YOU GO! Give them the "finger purple" that is sooooo Rumpole, I love it!
Dartmouth University researchers recently estimated that more than half of new smokers take up the habit because they are influenced by the depiction of tobacco use in films, county public health director Dr. Jonathan Fielding said.
That was my first thought-I'd rather the kids see the characters smoking than most of what I've seen in the last few years.

Your tax dollars at work.Well since goverment officials are officially pulling stats out of thier ass to make a political point why dont I reach down there myself
Freepatriot32 estimates that almost half of the goverment whores in la county would gas jews to death if a strong vibrant leader cryed out for them to do so after brainwashing them for years with useless statitics on why it would be a good idea to do so.Hows that do i get a goverment grant now ?

Addressing a packed Hviezdoslavovo Square in Bratislava, Slovak Republic, President Bush today hailed images of "jubilant Iraqis dancing in the streets last month, holding up ink-stained fingers."
"In recent times, we have witnessed landmark events in the history of liberty: A Rose Revolution in Georgia, an Orange Revolution in Ukraine, and now, a Purple Revolution in Iraq."
