One person who could probably beat Hinchey is Thomas Libous, a very able politican, a Republican state senator from Binghamton in Hinchey's district. But Libous has preferred to remain in the state senate, probably hoping to become majority leader when Joe Bruno retires.
However, with the Republicans in danger of losing their state senate majority, perhaps Libous will consider a run for the congressional seat more seriously.
