University of Illinois officials said Tuesday they can't locate Ward Churchill's master's thesis and aren't sure if he was required to write one.
The embattled University of Colorado ethnic-studies professor claims undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Illinois' Springfield campus, which was known as Sangamon State University until 1995. Springfield is in Sangamon County.
University of Illinois at Springfield spokeswoman Cheryl Peck confirmed that Churchill received a bachelor's degree in 1974 and a master's degree in 1975. But no thesis is on file, she said.
"We can't say for sure he didn't write one," Peck said. It is not clear if a thesis was a requirement at the time Churchill received the degree in communications, she said.
CU spokeswoman Pauline Hale said she did not know if faculty members inquired about Churchill's thesis in 1991 before giving him tenure.
Documents released last week by CU indicate some faculty members had reservations about granting tenure to a professor who lacked a doctorate.
The documents are silent on a master's thesis.
On Tuesday, Illinois faculty members described Sangamon State - in the 1970s, when Churchill attended - as focused on innovative teaching methods, including an emphasis on social issues of the day.
The campus did not have academic departments. Instead, faculty members were rostered under interdisciplinary groupings, including Churchill's major, communications in a technological society.
Students could major in traditional subjects, such as history or English, but they could also design their own majors in consultation with the faculty.
Larry Golden, a political scientist and one of the original professors when Sangamon opened in 1970, said the school was not as freewheeling as it sounds.
Proposals for self-designed majors were given extensive faculty review, he said.
The campus served only juniors, seniors and master's-degree students. They would have taken the standard courses at a two-year college before coming to Sangamon.
The program included an "applied-studies term," in which students earned credit by working off campus. Projects ranged from working with a state legislator to community organizing.
The students were required to take part in a seminar and write journals or term papers as part of the program, Golden said.
"You couldn't just go to an anti-war rally in Washington and say, 'That's my experience,' " Golden said.
Evidently, CU's OUT of State applications are DOWN 19%.
An outlandish conservative in similar circumstances would have been thoroughly discredited and savaged by the liberal media by now.
"He's also claimed on various occasions to have gone to paratrooper school, and to have been a LURP (long-range reconnaissance patrol--basically hunter-killer units that tracked North Vietnamese targets deep into enemy territory)"
I have an old friend who was a real LURP and there is NO WAY this Churchill guy could have possibly made the grade. Men who were LURPs were among the most elite of the elite and loved America. Churchill should occupy a special place in the Hall of Shame.
I know people who have earned Master's degrees from NC State in engineering who only had to take 6 classes for it. No test, no project, no thesis. 6 classes in one year and they are done.
This is so funny. Churchill (if that's his real name) is exposed as a bigger and bigger fraud every day. He's dragging the whole phony CU-Boulder university system down with him. Boulder has always been Hippie U, and now it's barely Hippie Community College.
LOL! This is actually the case in every profession.
It seems obvious that, in regard to this Churchill fellow, it should be his lack of judgement under scrutiny and not his education. These fools like Churchill always act as if they are the underdog.

Churchill would NEVER have made it through Marine boot camp in the 60's, hell, even today he'd be dropped in First Phase. This guy has LIMP D!CK stamped on his forehead.
I'd LOVE to get in the ring with this guy and I'd bet a month's pay I'd beat his ASS like a drum! And the VA says I'm 40% disabled.
Ward, if you read this...BRING IT BEEEEEEEAAAAAAAATCH! Let me know when and where.
To hell with the Spanish courses. What I really want to know is whether the University of Tennessee taught you how to give CPR to a hamster.
No kidding! Did they go to work for the American automobile industry? Seriously though, do you know if any worked in engineering fields?

I'll take a wild guess that they all have real bachelor's degrees in engineering.
I can't wait for the Board of Regents to fire this fraudulent "academic"...

Remember the guy in San Diego (UCSD, I think) who hadn't even completed a single college level class. He only came up on the radar because he was appointed Poet Laureate of California. Making 160K+ a year. Teaching the children of people paying for the "higher" education. Is he still teaching?
This is being pursued also. I'm trying to find out through the Ranger department if he was ever a Ranger as he claims.
Soitenly!!!
The entire curriculum, it seems, is learning that "Swingin' the Alphabet" song.
EXCELLENT! LOL
...University of Illinois officials said Tuesday they can't locate Ward Churchill's master's thesis and aren't sure if he was required to write one......Maybe he got it by smoke signals.
No prob, kemosabe.
Churchill can fabricate a master's thesis pronto.
He just needs to make sure he finds a pre-1975 typewriter.
His pathological hatred for America and American culture and values makes that impossible.
Also, he'd have to have wisdom to logic out what is obvious to you.
