County Press ^
Posted on 02/23/2005 5:54:12 AM PST by Tribune7
The insecticide DDT was banned in 1972. Should the ban be lifted for limited use?
No, it cant be used safely.
Yes, it is one of the most effective pesticides ever devised, its dangers have been wildly exaggerated, and its restriction has caused great and unnecessary suffering especially in the developing world.

YES! THAT STUPID BAN NEEDS TO BE LIFTED!
I've had malaria many times. If I could use DDT I could control the mosquito population a lot better.

Wasn't DDT the subject of Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring? I always wondered if that was a legitimate concern or typical Chicken Little liberal crap.

Can DDT be smoked like marijuana? If so, yes, the ban should be lifted.

The answer is a resounding "YES!" Enough with the feel-good elitist envirowackoism already! Lift the ban and let the people eat.

DDT was an inexpensive pest killer. I think maybe it was a bit over used, but it worked. I bet if it is released again the price will have soared.

I think the ban should be lifted. It was a great way to control the flies and mosquitoes.

When i was down in the Dominican Republic they were spraying with DDT. My dad said "Smell that? You'll never smell that in the US, it's DDT" and then i was learned.

Too bad we can't limit the poll to those who know what the hell they're talking about. Otherwise, you might as well go to a hair salon and ask them for their 2005 football predictions.

Silent Spring caused the death of untold human beings in many parts of the world.
The beginning of junk science that permeates the so called environmental community.

Of course repeal. As opposed to largely unsubstantiated claims of harm to birds, the ban kills hundreds of thousands of real people every year. With DDT, malaria almost vanished as a public health concern, now we are back to 2.5 million cases annually. The sad part is, most of the beneficial use of DDT does not require outdoor broadcasting. DDT is sprayed on interior walls and ceilings where the mosquito hangs waiting for people to sleep. While selective outdoor spraying would be useful, we could make a huge dent in malaria without any outdoor use.

And your EVIDENCE that it was a bit overused?
How many deaths would you be willing to accept to cut back, a bit?
