I agree the police officer's actions were awful, but what does this have to do with homeschooling, per se?
This could have happened to any group on any day. The cop didn't go after them because they were a homeschooling group -- he did it because he is a control-freak jerk.
It does have something to do with homeschooling. Schools now have "zero tolerance" rules (otherwise known as zero common sense) which prohibit not just weapons, but butter knives, pictures of guns, even pointed fingers. Homeschooled kids are not indoctrinated in this. The teacher and police sent them a message that they better get with the program.
The cop is lucky that it was a mom that he had to deal with, if it had been me the cop would have been in the hospital. Yeah I realize they would get me for assaulting an officer, but if he made no attempt to identify himself then he is just another citizen assaulting a minor.
Great News!
2/24/05 Felony Charge Dropped!
As of 13:00 EST today, the charge against "Sarah" has been dropped! Recall that "Sarah" was charged with assaulting a police officer, which is a felony. Needless to say, we are quite pleased. Currently we are awaiting news on the misdemeanor charge against "Tim".
Thank you for the update. What's the latest on the cop?
Money can't buy knives? It's true you know. One time I went to a knife store and said, 'here's ten thousand dollars. can i buy some knives?' And the guy said 'No! Money can't buy knives!'" /Rob Schneider
Well, have carried a knife openly in NC for years, checked it in the courthouse and fed building whenever I had business there, only comments ever being "nice knife." As it is, I have noticed more often than not that the security has pulled it out of the sheath. Municipal offices will put up a sign after you visit the first time, I have noted as well.
The University police requested I put it in the car once, after informing me that the student handbook was incomplete on the issue (it said that students were only allowed to have kitchen knives in their dorms - I figured, I am not in a dorm...)
I don't know what they think they're accomplishing ... if someone wanted to kill the mayor, or whatever, they're not going to be stopped by a sign.
Well, way I figure it, if I am disarmed by some stupid regulation, and then me or mine is injured by someone who disobeyed because I am less able to perform my duties to my family and community, then someone ought to be sued.
Many of these laws are immoral, by this way of looking at it, so...
You could try suing the perp, I suppose, but I think the courts have generally ruled that the government is allowed to disarm you, but doesn't have an enforceable duty to protect you.
I agree that it's immoral.
Well, if they won't let themselves be sued, and the law is immoral, then the citizen really only has one choice, eh?
Stay out of the parks?
err.... yeah.
see previous tagline!
LOL - that's another option, of course!
Na - his woman was prolly making him wear them in his @$$ that day..
