Riverside, N.J., Feb. 21, 2005 — Sources say the 14-year-old boy having an affair with a teacher is cooperating with police, but is reluctant to divulge details for fear of getting her in more trouble. Action News has been told the boy is in love with the teacher, who is ten years older, and that the two even talked of marriage.
Gail Nottie/STORE OWNER: "I can't understand it, I can't see what a women would see in a child."
People are still in shock about the arrest Friday of a substitute teacher at Riverside High School for allegedly having an affair with a fourteen-year-old student.
Twenty-four-year-old Angela Stellwag, the daughter of Delran Mayor Joseph Stellwag, has been charged with sexual assault. Police say the two met in 2003 at Beverly City school when he was an eighth grader, and Stellwag was a substitute. Students there say there was lots of talk.
Mychalynn Bryant/STUDENT: "He would always stay after school with her and like people just started getting suspicious."
Gabrielle Hensley/Student: "One time I was at Sub Shack and I seen them up there, and they were making out in the car, and 'Wow'."
Efforts to contact Stellwag and her attorney were unsuccessful authorities have seized e-mails and love notes between the teacher and teen as evidence.
Attorney Mike Riley represent the boy and his family and says the fourteen-year-old is having a difficult time.
Mike Riley/VICTIM'S ATTORNEY: "The young man is not in a position where he has the legal capacity to give legal consent.... The shock of this relationship being exposed, the intense news interest in the relationship, the fact that he obviously has feelings for this young lady. It's a very distressing and disturbing situation he finds himself in."
At the deli down the street from Riverside High, people are shaking their heads.
Sal Notte/STORE OWNER: "Now whether she's guilty or not, I don't want to judge anybody, but it's just a horrible thing that happened."

I am a bit confused by conflicting legal moralities for underage boys. On one hand, a 14 year boy can not consent to sex. On the other hand we have seen a 12 year old boy ruled old enough to be tried as an adult in a murder case.
If a 12 year old is old enough to be an adult in a murder case, how can a 14 year old boy not be old enough to consent to sex.
Please do not get the impression that I am defending either the 12 year old murderer or the actions of a mature teacher. I am just trying to understand the conflicting logic.

Anyway, if I said 5, 25, or 55, it wouldn't matter. I know what I know, and I don't let things bother me. 'Pardons should try it.
Sorry if I sound overly sensitive on this, but it seems that you can not go a day anymore without reading about children being victimized by adults. I can not imagine what it must be like to be a child today and try to reach adulthood physically and mentally intact. The politicians will pander to special interest groups and enact hate-crime laws if 1 of these individuals is so much as called a name, but because children do not vote or cast large donations before them, they are ignored. I saw an FBI crime report the other day that cited 9 hate crime murders and murders of children under the age of 18 was in the neighborhood of 20K or more for the same year. More police officers and pregnant women were murdered than the members of protected groups (squeky wheel truly does get the oil). So, if I sound overly sensitive on this, I am sorry, but also very concerned that the people least able to defend themselves are largely going ignored and abandoned.
Example of part of the problem: I heard a comedian on broadcast television impart the following (so-called) joke - I like my scotch like I like my women, 12 years old and mixed up with coke - the audience laughed
That would be for the first encounter of the day. The fifth or sixth encounter of the day will probably last a bit longer...if you get my drift.

Problem is this lady looks like she isn't older than 14 herself.
When I was a kid--it seems like 24 used to look older.

This was kept very quiet by the Charlotte Mecklenburg school district (the school district is currently in the midst of some real problems and this was the last thing they needed)--first time I heard of it was this evening.
