Police commander killed, two hurt in border ambush(Mexico)

NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico- A Nuevo Laredo police commander was killed and two other people injured in an early morning attack on Monday.

Hector Villareal was at a taco stand early Monday when an unknown number of assailants opened fire. He died a few minutes after his arrival at a hospital, said Juan Varela, a spokesman for state police.

Police officer Manuel Moreno and Blanca Salazar, who was fired from Nuevo Laredo police last year, were wounded and were in stable condition, Varela said.

Police said Villareal was to receive an award Monday for capturing a group of men who had robbed several convenience stores.

Investigators were trying to determine a motive for the attack and said they were searching for a minivan believed to be the assailants' getaway vehicle.

Nuevo Laredo, across the U.S. border from Laredo, Texas, has become a battleground between rival gangs of drug traffickers.

Authorities say a cartel allegedly led by Joaquin Guzman has been fighting the Gulf cartel for control of smuggling routes in Tamaulipas state, where Nuevo Laredo is located.

Earlier this month, hit men ambushed Rene Alfaro, commander of operations for Nuevo Laredo police, as he left his home. Alfaro was not hurt but his sister was injured.

This is what happens when the police get involved with drug cartels in the wrong way.

Oh please say it isn't so. Mexico actually has 'regular' criminals that rob convenience stores? Does that mean those crimes are our fault too? Or are drug crimes the only ones that are our fault?
