I don't get it. I was a college liberal who read Fear and Loathing and I didn't get it then. I still don't get it.

Nihilistic and morose, he created his own hell on earth for himself with his excesses. Why shouldn't he commit suicide? He did more or less what he wanted in life. He was regarded as a hero by many. Although there are those of us who don't regard suicide as a particularly heroic action.

You and me both! The first thing out of the "On-The-Hour" radio news was the news of the death of this guy. The way they were going on I stopped puttering around the kitchen, listened to the rest of the spiel and thought, "Who??"

Then I went on line to find out who and what the heck they were talking about, and came up with these charming picture:

Thompson wakes up mid-afternoon in a San Francisco hotel room after a night on the town, with his ever-present scotch and cigarette.
