I don't think an accident is possible.
HST had 40 years of experience handling firearms while stoned.
I wouldn't expect him to hang around for a lingering end if he had a terminal diagnosis, or a diagnosis of something totally debilitating like Alzheimer's. He was a control freak, despite a lifetime spent trying to get out of control.
And a savagely funny writer.

That's probably true but it's my only perspective for now. Perhaps his earlier work merits praise. I didn't understand what the fuss was all about.

Author Hunter S. Thompson Kills Himself
ASPEN, Colo. (AP) -- Hunter S. Thompson, the acerbic counterculture writer who popularized a new form of journalism in books like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," fatally shot himself Sunday night at his Aspen-area home, his son said. He was 67.
"Hunter prized his privacy and we ask that his friends and admirers respect that privacy as well as that of his family," Juan Thompson said in a statement released to the Aspen Daily News.
Pitkin County Sheriff Bob Braudis, a personal friend of Thompson, confirmed the death to the News. Sheriff's officials did not return calls to The Associated Press late Sunday.

I'm shocked at this. Rumor had it he was in line to succeed Dan Rather as anchor of the CBS Evening News.

Yeah, it's funny how these ghouls come out just to tell you how they don't care. If they don't care, why are they on the thread?

I prefer the quote, "I was always taught to speak good of the dead. Hunter S. Thompson is dead... good."
I believe that is a paraphrase of Bette Davis. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

"What dirt did Hunter Thompson have on the Bush family?" If he had any, he wouldn't have killed himself.
Nevertheless, our prayers go out to him and his family. Rest in Peace.
