Hemingway was a self-indulgent, pedantic, drunken old sod. I never liked his writing

I didn't care for his novels, but his short stories (particularly the compilation entitled "The Nick Adams Stories") were nuggets of pure genius.

Hunter S. Thompson, on the other hand, didn't interest me at all. IMO, his writing was trendy, not timeless.

I don't know what to say except...damn.

I don't know why I didn't see this one coming, but I must say that this is an ugly surprise with which to end the night. Goodnight, Hunter, you old weirdo you.

Now, if only a Republican or Libertarian writer would have the guts to take up his "all-or-nothing" blueprint for Gonzo journalism and run with it with the same passion that he did back in the day writing for Rolling Stone. Just think of it: a half-baked (or just plain baked), rambling, scathing trek across America following the slimy footprints of Kerry's 2004 campaign would be a hilarious read. Who'll step up to the plate for the good side?

Actually, they were good friends!

Good debaters but cut from the same cloth really, they both like their firepower and both have that maniac quality that blurs the line!

An American icon gone from the scene. Not a complete shock, but sad nonetheless.

Out of curiosity, since Garry Trudeau celebrated Thompson in the form of Uncle Duke, what's gonna happen to Duke now?

Hemmingway was at his best in the short stories. And maybe the two early novels (Sun Also Rises, A Farwell to Arms). He literally revolutionized English prose.

He was an original and for that fact alone he will be missed, politics aside.

R.I.P. Dr. Thompson. "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail" are classics.

I remember when he ran for sheriff in aspen and was running on a platform of turning all the streets into sidewalks and just having a big parking lot at the edge of town.

One of his pet causes at the end of his life was to free Lisl Auman.

Believe it, or not, Hunter Stockton Thompson was an Air Force Veteran (1956-57). I enjoyed "Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas" and some of his other earlier works as an adolescent, although I was already politically conservative, due to his style of writing, humor and outlandishness. RIP

Didn't he want to rename Aspen "Fat City" because of all the development?
