Somehow, I have a hard time believing that God wants His children to mutilate themselves in this idiotic manner.

The sooner that Islam is eradicated from the face of the earth, the better for us all.

Yep.

Actually there are three views on the subject and just what transpires. Some groups taking the words literally others subject to a more metaphorical interpretation.

"Somehow, I have a hard time believing that God wants His children to mutilate themselves in this idiotic manner."

Any idea why some Christians might?

IMO, any literal interpretation of scripture is rife with problems. Such as the acting out of the Shiites and the Filipino Catholics. I won't get into fundamentalist Christians of any stripe since I'm weary today.

So what's worse? Cutting the kids up (in one religion) or buggering 'em and getting away with it (another religion)?

At least if they cut 'em up a lot more they won't survive to be bus bombers or jetplane divers...

Filipinos tend to be radically religious - hence their crucification ceremony every year where Catholics are crucified.

Of course, Filipino Christians aren't otherwise blowing themselves up, sliting innocent people's throats, and preaching death to other faiths.

I'm not sure what percentage of people partake in this barbaric ceremony in Iraq, but in Iran it's a fairly small percentage.

That's nothing! I have heard of several groups of religious zealots who cut off their foreskins!

There are several pictures of obvious child abuse. No one should be inflicting major cuts on a child for any reason.
"So what's worse? Cutting the kids up (in one religion) or buggering 'em and getting away with it (another religion)?"
I think you know better than to say this. In the Muslim case, it's part of a religious ceremony to injure the children. In the priest's cases, they acted in violation of their religion, sinning.
There is nothing in Catholic theology that condones what they did.

Piercing, tatooing, branding, hanging from hooks embedded in ones skin, sticking plates in ones lips.

The world is full of bizarre practises. To single out this one is pretty ignorant.

So..when can we start expecting the libtards to say it's ok for muslim kids here in America to start showing up at schools on 'Ashura Day' with butcher's knives and bloodied heads for 'show and tell'.

No good purpose is served by judgement upon a people who through their own free will choose to express a facet of their religion by self-punishment. As I understand it, this phenomenon has its roots in the death of the nearest blood relative of mohammad. A death that robbed the Shia of the direct line of succession, the Caliphate. Let them mourn as they see fit. Iraq is now a democratic country, the people have their own customs, culture and history.

CHRISTIAN HOLIDAY: People attend church and pray, decorate trees and eggs and exchange gifts.

JEWISH HOLIDAY: People pray, then EAT.

MUSLIM HOLIDAY: People pray, beat each other with knives and swords, stone "Satan," get trampled and die.

Almost as ignorant as defending them...

Reuters provides us with a whole series of explicit photographs of a custom that is bound to create reaction of disgust in the West, but never brings to our attention such items as the number of schools that have been built, the thousands of children that have been innoculated, the water-filtration plants, the hospitals operational, the numbers of Iraqi men joining the military and the police-force, the over-all reconstruction of Iraq.

Of course not. But pictures of an ancient religious rite that's guaranteed to shock and make some people say 'they are nothing but barabarians' yes, those are pictures Reuters has plenty of.

Thanks for nothing, Reuters. I know what Reuters is up to. Reuters is telling us, 'Look at whom you gave freedom; a bunch of bl**dy barbarians'.

Sorry Reuters, it doesn't work. The Shia might be bleeding, but your preferred Dictator poisoned a village, filled mass-graves, put people into shredders, etc.
