Home Depot ignored Alan R. Sporn for almost two years, but a $1-million court judgment got the company's attention.
The Laguna Hills businessman had his Social Security number stolen, which ended up in a dozen requests for Home Depot credit.
The fiasco hurt Sporn's credit rating, but the home improvement giant that prides itself in customer service brushed off his concerns until he filed a lawsuit, won and then tried to collect the money from a company bank account.

The Little Guy Wins. When I read this story, I couldn't believe a multi-billion dollar corporation would ignore a lawsuit and lose a result of their own cluelessness and arrogance. If they had taken Alan Sporn's complaint about being an identity theft victim seriously, they would be a million dollars richer today. Stiffing the customer never pays.

Are you being subsidized by Denny Crane (whomever the hell he is) or Fox News for your incessant flaking, advertising and huckstering?

Who IS Denny Crane?William Shatner (aka Captain Kirk) plays Denny Crane on the show Boston Legal.
One of the few shows I watch, Shatner is extremely funny in this role as a law firm partner. I believe he has won at least one Emmy for this role.

I love God and adore Fox News. Pay no attention to my second tagline.

One of the main problems here is the credit score business,Fair Isaac.
Your FICO is God when applying for credit.

HAHAHAHA - six posts and no one has yet commented about Home Depot paying its attorneys all this money and they never responded to a lawsuit! Sheesh - Denny Crane could have told them if a $1 million wasn't enough to get their attention, nothing ever would. And this is a company that prides itself on customer service. How in the world did they miss this one?

I LOVE Denny Crane!!!!!!
He is the ultra conservative...tough, no bullshit ( except his own to get results), compassionate and soooo politically incorrect! He and Candace Bergen are so hot!

Alan Sporn sent notice to Home Depot. Ordinarily, they'd file a response. You know as well as I do what happens when you don't respond to a lawsuit. A default judgment is entered against you by the court. Not showing up is the same as admitting to the truth of the plaintiff's allegations. I can't believe it took a collection service by the Sheriff Department to wake a home improvement company up to what happened.

We're missing a really interesting point; the mystery guy in Virginia was only interested in credit with Home Depot...why? I just gotta know!
To: goldstategop
Home Depot's credit department is actually handled by CitiBank. I almost wonder if Home Depot ever even knew about the problem.

In its appeal, the company accused Sporn of being underhanded. Home Depot said in its filings that Sporn "obtained by stealth" the "excessive" default judgment, which the company discovered only when Sporn "began enforcement efforts after laying in the weeds for many months."Anyone who's worked with the civil judgment process in California would find this statement immediately laughable. Either the Home Depot legal department is incompetent or the corporation needs to make clear to all of it's employees what they need to do when served.
Either way, if I owned Home Depot, I'd fire people over this.

They knew about this and it somehow fell in between the cracks. This may be a funny story but identity theft is no laughing matter. Someone stole the real guy's Social Security number and used it to request a credit line with Home Depot. The customer service people didn't look hard enough into it to resolve the issue. If they are a million dollars' poorer today, its a lesson on how not to deal with a legitimate customer's complaints about a scam.

but a $1-million court judgment got the company's attention. GOOD......he should have got more.
I have no use for Home Depot on the news that they are now working with "La Raza".
