I've been wondering who among the Republicans would be a viable candidate in 08 since there's no heir apparent.
This scenario makes sense but there's one fly in the ointment. Condi's never been elected to office. Is there a precedence for someone (besides George Washington or maybe one of the very earliest Prez's) being elected with no previous elected office?
Condi could be a good choice IF---and only if---she makes up her mind to cut away from the pack on immigration. If she stakes out a strong anti-illegal stand, and maybe lures Owens in as Veep, even her "pro-choice" views would be politically irrelevant.
Presidents Hoover and Eisenhower.
Dwight Eisenhower, Ulysses S. Grant, and Andrew Jackson for sure.
Not so sure, but maybe Woodrow Wilson?
Even Abraham Lincoln only held one 2 year term in the House, and was defeated when he re-ran, and it was a long time before he ran for President.
Co-elected, remember ?
In case it hasn't been answered yet...Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Any number of the "military presidents" qualify---Andrew Jackson,Zachary Taylor, Ulysses Grant, Ike (one has to consider Washington a "military president" as well). I suspect there were civilians in there too.
she's been too busy accomplishing real experience
Eisenhower. Grant.

Yes. General Dwight David Eisenhower, and General Ullyses S. Grant. Both terrible presidents who did unbelievable damage to the Republican party.
Also, in the winner of the 1912 race was just a university professor with no electoral experience at all in 1909. But then Woodrow Wilson got himself elected governor of New Jersey in 1910 and ran for president in 1912, and won re-election in 1916.

Ike
Not since Eisenhower. There are quite a few former military officers who came in that way (Scott, Grant). Also Jefferson, who was not military.
Although he did not hold prior U.S. government elected office, George Washington was a delegate to the Virginia House of Burgesses before the Revolution..... State legislators (although not directly usually via military service or through other offices) during that time was a regular stepping stone to the presidency...
Is there a precedent for electing someone to the presidency who has next to nothing in the way of administrative experience, someone who holds office because of the power and influence of their spouse's position? Compare this with the experience of managing the State Dept, the national security apparatus, and not withstanding major management positions at a university and various organizations. Should be a no-brainer. Should be.......
