New guidelines for treating 'intersex' babies

Doctors urged not to operate on infants with unclear gender

It’s the first question new parents hear: girl or boy? But hundreds of babies are born each year where the gender isn’t clear. Prompt surgery to assign one was once the norm.

But gender depends on more than anatomy or hormones. It also seems to stem from the very earliest brain development, researchers said Friday in urging doctors to hold off on the knife until children can determine their own sex.

“To discover who or what a child is ... you have to ask them,” Dr. William Reiner of the Oklahoma University Health Science Center told a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

“There is no one biological parameter that clearly defines sex,” added Dr. Eric Vilain of the University of California, Los Angeles, whose research suggests gender is genetically hard-wired into the brain before birth — regardless of which genitalia develop.

The issue is “intersex,” the name for numerous conditions that result in roughly one in 4,000 babies born with both male and female traits.

In the program I saw, people of ambiguous sex who had surgery were very unhappy with their reconstructive surgery.

Although it would be great if that were possible, I can think of all kinds of social complications for the growing child--which restroom in school, etc.

Homeschooling would solve that...but I did see an extensive interview with an intersex person who chose to remain the same, and have no surgery. The person claimed to be completely asexual, in inclination.

It is very simple. The doctors should do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING until the kid grows up and figures out what he or she wants to be or if they are happy the way they are. Using a knife or hormones or parents' selfish wishes or guesses, only has and will only lead to disaster.

It'd be the same in principle, but it's a vastly less common situation. Surgeons have been inclined to make all ambiguous-gender kids into 'girls', because female genitalia is much easier to physically construct.

"Jamie Lee Curtis would have made a terrible man. It looks like they guessed correctly."

What are you talking about?

I just get the feeling there is more of an agenda in this research than meets the eye.

I agree with you completely but I can't help wondering how society would deal with these children until such time as they make a "decision". What restroom? What athletic team? Showers in PE? It is a terrible situation and I feel such sorrow for the families that have to deal with this.

"It is very simple. The doctors should do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING until the kid grows up and figures out what he or she is or if they are happy just the way they are. Guessing with a knife and hormones and parents' selfish wishes leads to absolute disaster."

That is very good advice. Let the child decide which gender they belong to, they are the only person that has the right to make that decision.

What do you mean?

That you're assuming that genitilia determine gender; but transgenders report that they feel they are actually of the opposite gender. And if they don't know, who does? You and I can't know something like that for them.

So when you say "The idea that you can change a boy into a girl just by mutilating him & giving him some hormones...", from the 'boy's standpoint, you want to leave her with boy parts in the hope she'll change her mind.

Try thinking of a transgendered man as a really homely woman who wants to improve her looks and you may find 'his' actions more comprehensible.

Right, or I could think of it as a perversion and the practice of homosexuality is unhygienic and dangerous. We tolerate it, we don't embrace it.

The HRC and other MSM mediots must see this as a way of "bluring" the debate on homosexual marriage. It is pure propaganda.

Create confusion.

This is not a difficult debate. This is not unlike the thalidimide babies. Where are the gene tests? This story is way to basic.

First CBS now PMSNBC are pushing these stories? coincidence?

What happened? All the NYT homosexuals went to work for the wacko cable groups?

Goebles would be proud.

Oh, it's definitely a perversion! Of the body if you do something about it, or of the spirit if you don't. So which do you think is the worse perversion?

I think the worst perversion is when some young guy get's sphylis and his internal organs start bleeding, or Aids and he starts rotting away, or Gonoria,

It's a perversion to have a shorter lifespan.

Please don't say homosexuality is okay. It isn't. It is killing young men.

Homosexuality can also be triggered by a males environment.

You are absolutly right.

This is an agenda story straight from the Goebles handbook.
Where the facts are against you, create confusion.

The story does not mention this is very very very very very rare. If anything, it will be a toe hold on telling NO NORMAL CHILD they are boy or girl.

This is feminist sexual role politics. This has NOTHING to do with established science.

If a child is XX and born deformed (ala thalidimide babies) then the next steps are clear, same for XY children.

This is about trying to "de-sexual identity" normal boys and girls. What next? Will GLSEN come in on some kind of anti-violence BS?

This is GARBAGE. Any reporter reporting on this must be a homosexual.

There is a rumor that Jamie Lee Curtis, just like Wallis Simpson, was born with androgen insensitivity syndrome. That is, her genotype is XY, but she was born with (mostly) female characteristics. The fact that she has adopted children has fueled this speculation. Who knows for certain?

I don't see an agenda myself in the proper way to treat birth defects, but the implications here will surely piss off the feministas.

Male and female brains different? Say it isn't so or the feminists will faint and cry!
