RUSH: Here is Heather in Burbank. Hi, Heather. Welcome to the EIB Network.
CALLER: Hi, Rush. I just want to let you know that I am the complete opposite of all those stories. You and my husband have inspired me to do two things. First off, I am a former liberal, daughter of a public schoolteacher, and family of feminazis and I was really laid off so what I've done last year is I converted to being a Republican and voted for Bush, whereas in 2000 I voted for Gore and I just recently started my own business so I'm no longer working for somebody else and praying to God that I have Social Security in the end.
RUSH: You know, I am so gratified to hear this. I've had an experience or two happen to me recently that makes me realize -- and you are going to realize this, too, Heather -- just how fortunate, irreplaceable, unique, whatever you want to say, being your own boss is.
CALLER: It's been excellent so far.
RUSH: I'm telling you, it makes all the difference in the world. I was thinking about it recently. I got to thinking about just how unique I am. I'm probably one -- in the media, I'm probably one of maybe three or four people that has an audience -- I mean, on this side of the microphone -- that doesn't have to answer to anybody. I make my own decision, what I'm going to talk about, where I'm going to go, when I'm going to go there, who I'm going to see, blah, blah, blah. You know, I have some partners but it's always, "Hey, this is what I'm going to do." There is nobody that I have to report to, and that's so rare and so unique, and it is so liberating. I can't tell you. I dare say that had I tried to do what I've done as an employee of a radio station, it would have never happened. I'd have probably been fired four more times for using the word "therefore," too many times, which I was fired for once in Kansas City. So when I hear anybody saying they're taking the plunge and going out there to try to run their own business and be their own boss, I try to buck 'em up as I'm doing you. The progression is natural: You abandon liberalism first. You couldn't have done this as a liberal because you'd have been depending on government grants.
CALLER: Right.
RUSH: And then you had to get the support of your husband and your family to do this, and so I couldn't be happier to hear what you said. I congratulate you and applaud you.
CALLER: Thank you. It has a great deal to do with all that you've been talking about about entrepreneurialship and speaking so highly of, you know, the American spirit and how people really can do more than what companies and what the government tells them they can do, and --
RUSH: Why, they can do more than they even think they can do. You can do more than even you think you -- people can always do more than they think they can or are capable of themselves. That's been my experience. I think people do not know their own potential. Few people do. There are so few self-starters, but when you own your own business and it's up to you and you're paying other people first before you're paying you, yourself, you find out very quickly what you're made of. You find out very quickly what you're capable of and you talk about satisfaction and gratification is doing what you want to do and the way you want to do it, and then succeeding at that is the tip of the iceberg. That's the peak of the iceberg. I think that's just tremendous. I've always believed just simply based on my own experiences that all of us are far more capable of things than we even know, and we've all had -- I'm sure you were a -- did you say you were a schoolteacher?
CALLER: No. My mother was a schoolteacher.
RUSH: Your mother was. Well, even though she was a schoolteacher, I'll guarantee you that everybody in life can remember a favorite teacher and as you get older... It probably wasn't a teacher you liked, it probably wasn't a teacher that coddled you. It was a teacher that pushed you. It was a teacher that showed you that they could get more out of you than you could get out of yourself, and that's, you know, whenever that experience happens to anybody in their lives and hopefully the younger the better. That's when the doors open and you find out that potential is a limitation that you place on yourself, or limitations that we place on ourselves are self-placed. We -- for example, a person wants to do X, but X isn't available where they live. "Well, I can't do X because I can't move. My family's all here." Okay. Fine. Your decision. But realize this: It's the limitation you've placed on yourself. The opportunity is there. You're the one denying yourself the opportunity because you've made a judgment you don't want to move. We all go through these things. But I am fully believing now and a full believer in the notion that most limitations that people face are placed on themselves by themselves. Not by others. That the limitations you think others place on you are just an excuse for not branching out or trying something. And so, you know, I love getting calls like yours. I love hearing from people that are -- not just the shift that you've made ideologically -- but what is your business? What are you doing?
CALLER: I'm a human resource consultant. I've actually written a book for small and medium-sized businesses to help them with all of the stupid laws and regulations dealing with business.
RUSH: Yeah.
CALLER: Could I possibly mention my website to any of the business owners?
RUSH: Well, you know, the problem with that I must be honest, we have an advertiser who does exactly what you do.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
RUSH: And it would be competing with them.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
RUSH: So please don't take this personally -- and I'm not trying to discourage you, either, because they are so big that they only deal with certain sized clients. You probably are dealing with smaller clients. Go ahead and mention your name of your website. Go ahead and give it. Doesn't matter.
CALLER: www.HumanCapitalHR.com and it's really designed for very small or mid-sized businesses or franchises.
RUSH: Right. Well, it's, see, golden opportunity out there -- and I'm not going to ask you how you stumbled across it because I can figure it out. The sponsor we have is Administaff and, you know, as I always say, "Don't be fooled by the name." Administaff has gone in and basically has set themselves up as the human resources division of any business that wants to hire them to do it, because human resources requirements slow down creativity and entrepreneurship. Human resource requirements is nothing but a bunch of paperwork to keep the government off your hands, and a number of other things, and, you know, self-starters, business owners who started on their own, find out that it takes so much time to do all that that their productivity, what they really want to do and their business gets in the way. So hence the Administaff people came along and they've gotten so big that their clients are of a certain level up and so you're in a burgeoning marketplace out there. In fact, you're in a business that actually would hope for more government regulation because it will bring you more clients. A little conflict there with your newfound conservatism but you'll find a way to balance it. I have no doubt.
Denny Crane: "There are two places to find the truth. First God and then Fox News."
My husband and I are in the process of starting our own business which we hope will lead to capital to start a larger one, that's the goal anyway.
We realized that if we are going to do it, now is the time, especially with a favorable White House for entrepenuers.
Wish us luck. Man, this is a great country heh, FReepers?!
Good luck, cb. Just don't give your husband an ultimatum.
:) Hehe!
"Wish us luck."
I do, I do, break a leg as they say in the theatre!
"Man, this is a great country heh, FReepers?!"
Amen to that, this wonderful country which has been so good to us!
Years ago, after working for over 40 years for other people, I told my four sons that they would be happier working for themselves.
Three of them have their own businesses and have done well. One has done exceptionally well. But they all know that they have gone on the right road.
I can't fault the fourth, who served in the Navy, got an MBA and is a VP of the largest real estate management company in the world. Most of his anguish is the fact that he is busting his ass for a company that doesn't recognize his value. And he is right.
Go for it. And best of luck. You seem to have the right attitude and that is more than half of the game.
I was listening to this call on Rush today. Another person realizing that liberalism is a failed ideology. Welcome aboard!
