G.O.P. Says Corzine's Cash Makes Him the New Boss (one-man bull market for Democrats)
NY TIMES ^ | February 18, 2005 | DAVID KOCIENIEWSKI

TRENTON, Feb. 17 - In the six years since he moved from a Wall Street boardroom to the trenches of New Jersey politics, Senator Jon S. Corzine has become a one-man bull market for Democrats.

Election records show that since 1999, when he first expressed interest in seeking a Senate seat, Mr. Corzine, his family members and his political action committees have given nearly $8 million to Democratic organizations, candidates and party officials, from county freeholders to the Democratic National Committee to the party's presidential nominees.

Of those donations, $5 million has gone to a small group of New Jersey Democratic leaders who control many patronage jobs, public contracts and the placement of candidates' names on the ballot, according to an analysis of state and federal election records.

Many of those leaders rallied around Mr. Corzine in recent weeks by supporting his bid for governor and helping him fend off a potential primary challenge from the acting governor, Richard J. Codey.

But with the general election nine months away, Republicans like the party chairman, Tom Wilson, have seized on his donations to link Mr. Corzine to the party bosses who are widely blamed for the deal-making that has given New Jersey politics its nefarious reputation, calling him "boss of the bosses" and "the C.E.O. of the pay-to-play machine."

Mr. Corzine has said his donations were not made to advance his career or win public contracts for his political allies, but to promote issues like education and health care.

He has also sought to distance himself from the Democratic leaders by making government ethics a centerpiece of his campaign and proposing a plan that would limit how county bosses may use the big donations he has lavished upon them, which have enabled them to expand their influence.

The Democrat party is a bribery racket. The way to get influence is to give them a heck of a lot of money. That's why they are dictated to by the likes of Soros and Corzine.

In Jersey, the word isn't "boss," it is "capo." And, I believe, Don Corzinileone made his money in a techie business.

No, Goldman-Sachs. Left the position in January 1999 IIRC.

Left? I think he was tossed out on he buttocks.

That winter, upon his return from Christmas vacation in Telluride, Corzine's executive-committee colleagues gave him the news: They had unanimously voted to remove him from his post as CEO. Corzine was stunned. What was he going to do next? Bob Menschel, one of his former partners who is a major Democratic Party donor, told him: "It is best to go with your passion." "I've just left my passion," Corzine replied.

While Jon Corzine was still recovering from the shock of being ousted, Orin Kramer was planning Corzine's next career move. In mid-February, Frank Lautenberg, who is 75, announced his plans to retire.

You're right!!!! Thanks for the info! See, you learn somethin' new every day... LOL

In your opinion, what are the chances of a Republican governor for New "Joisey" next time around? (BTW, I'm a lifelong resident.)

And I always thought the Democratic Party was the party of the middle class. Corzine and Soros = Wall STreet. Not that there is anything wrong with that, just stop trying to sell the charade.

There will be no republican govenor unless the voter fraud is cleaned up.

I know voter registration information started getting subpoened from a few counties last year....but I've not seen anything to follow that up.

You're right of course. If I come across any info regarding voter registration issues, I'll keep you in mind and pass it along.

I have a few freepers in my ping list that keep bump lists on it.

I don't know what *we* can do about it though.

We need to do something, but I don't know what.

About 5% unless Corzine wakes up with a live boy or a dead girl.

Corzine will spend whatever it takes, easily 2/1 over his opponent, and NJ is a Dem state anyway. Our chances of winning ended when McGreevy stepped down.

He 'might' have done enough damage if he had stayed for us to win, and we would have murdered him had he run again, but you know all about Dems in NJ not running when they can't win...

I'd like to think we have a dog's chance in hell, but I don't.

Corzine was interviewed on Fox News this evening, opposing social security private accounts. He was prattling on about the (nonexistent) "trust fund". An honest answer would have been "the fewer people depend on a government check, the less they need us".

He will probably buy the governorship unles a lot of us wake up.

Didn't he make hundreds of millions at Goldman Sachs, as I recall..

It was estimated he was worth $400 million before he ran, and is widely believed to be possibly worth more now.

Corzine to me, has always been one of the biggest wastes of potential in both the senate and the democratic party.

The GOP should be greatfull, that the democratic party never utilized him properly and that he never took initive or has foresight or vision to be more.

Its a shame, looking at him, and oddly, knowing that what he is and could have been, is so vastly different.
