The Blackhawks played in the "East" from 1967-68 through 1969-70. When Vancouver and Buffalo entered the league in 1970-71 they were both put in the "East" and Chicago was moved to the "West" (I'm wondering if the Chicago ownership asked for this concession in order to escape the domination by Montreal and Boston in that era -- and to provide some competitive balance by assigning the two newest teams to the strongest division).

The league was organized this way with perhaps some minor changes until it set up four divisions in 1974-75 . . . that's when Philadelphia ended up in the equivalent of the "Patrick Division" with the two New York teams.

As you can tell, my post was based on memory. Two things go when you get old, the first is memory and the second is........I can't think of it at the moment.
I do, however, remember Johnny Wilson taking me into the Ranger dressing room in the old Garden to give me a stick. I got whiplash spinning my head to see all my heroes. Bathgate, Fontinato, Prentis, Worsly etc.
It's funny though, I lived breathed, ate and slept hockey for 40+ yrs. Then with the work stoppage in the early 90's after which the div. leading Rangers took an el-foldo, They lost me. I didn't even watch the 94 Cup series.
