http://newmarksdoor.typepad.com/mainblog/cars/index.html Volkswagon has produced a two-passenger concept car that gets 235 mpg. Looks like something from the Jetsons.
Almost every automaker at the recent Tokyo Motor Show displayed good hybrid-electric prototypes, some getting more than 100 mpg. Volkswagen already sells Europeans a 78-mpg, four-seat nonhybrid subcompact and plans a two-seat city car for 2003 that will get 235 mpg (not a typo; VW is even testing a diesel version that gets the equivalent of 282 mpg). When cars are so fuel-frugal, powering them with fuel cells becomes a near-term option using current technology."
Here's pics of the car and its technology. It looks pretty cool http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/frame.php?file=car.php&carnum=1316
Schwinns win! Columbias come in second place. I personally liked the English Raleigh with the three speed mount on the left handlebar. The hand brakes were questionable though. Coaster brakes were much more effective.
Inboard 11" slotted discs on Jaguar independent rear on a Cobra 289 Shelby are much more effective.
And I still clock about 30 mpg on a nice trip through the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Fuel mileage and a sense of fun, and functionality needs to be be balanced.
My next car will be a replacement H2.

You did notice that this vehicle was promised for 2003 right? I'd say the article's credibility ends right about there.
Looks like it was designed for Mini Me. God help a full sized person trying to squeeze into that thing, let alone a "person of size".
Which reminds me; they didn't state the payload, did they?
It is a plot by the American Chiropractic Association, to drum up business.
Tire chains; bag of sand; shovel; 1 gal gas can; 'survival kit'; extra jacket; oops--no more room for driver, let alone a passenger.
...or rip the pan out trying to get over a frozen cow-pie.
Didn't he also invent a method of producing enough energy to power all of California's electricity needs for just $3 a year, by converting spent nuclear reactor waste? I heard the by product from the process was tasty candy, 24K gold, and a cure for cancer.
nice car
It looks like the story is about 2 years old...
Crash and die.
classic!!
BUMP
I wonder how much space it needs to merge on the Autobahn.
Probably...we live over here and you MUST realize that these little things that are on the road here only go 25 km/hour. Divide 25 by 1.6 and you get the miles/hr. I can bicycle faster!
This car would be very fashionable for cruising from a Save the Whales rally to a MoveOn meeting...with a stop in between at the latte shop, of course.
Just keep that garbage in Europe, the current hybreds screw up traffic enough with their low power.
What passes for a large 4-door car would smash this thing to pieces.
Americans are addicted to gas guzzling SUV's ...
Americans demand practical vehicles. Why is that a problem?
Sorry if I offended. Just talking facts.
Do Fred and Barney come standard?
I have no problems with practical transportation.
