My seventh grader is doing a science fair project involving "handedness". She needs a larger sample for her data. If you would like to help, please do the following: clasp your hands together with your fingers intertwined. Report which thumb is on top and if you are right or left handed. Thanks for your help! Standing outside the grocery store didn't work, even with tootsie rolls as a thank you. People were too afraid we were selling something!

My son's project last year was "Does sugar increase your short term memory?" He had fasting subjects look at ten 6 digit numbers, wait 5 minutes, and rewrite them. Later he had them drink a can of lemonade, wait a half hour and take the test again with different numbers.
I was shocked at how much more I could remember after a sugar load. 2 the first time, 7 the second. It made a big difference for most people.
Little did I know those donut laden all nighters in college led to my grades to be dependent on my donut intake!

You're right. I just tried it. It depends on which index finger is on top. Whichever index finger is on top, that's the thumb on top (which makes sense because otherwise the fingers wouldnt't be properly interlaced. Two fingers from the same hand would be next to each other).
But even with that, there's definitely a way that feels more "natural" to me. I'm a righty and left index finger/left thumb on top feels the most natural. But if, for some reason, I put the right index finger on top then right thumb on top would follow.
