In this PC age of advertising, there is one group who can still be made the butt of jokes with total impunity: middle-aged white guys.
The latest installment was on display in a commercial I just caught. A befuddled guy is sitting on the couch, fiddling with the TV remote. His roughly 11-year old daughter enters, and he tells her he can't seem to switch to a given channel.
"Of course not," she curtly informs him, "it's been blocked." She goes on to inform the ignoramus that most channels can be blocked via the remote or by calling the cable company.
He asks whether channels can be unblocked, and once again she condescendingly explains they can, then snidely adds:
"But you're going to have to get Mom's permission."
He calls out for his wife. She enters, and he imploringly asks her if he can watch the channel. She glances at the screen, gives a curt "No!" then exits.
Another day in the life of Bumbling, Stumbling White Guy.
Yes, yes, I know: "don't be so touchy. I thought it was funny. Chill out. Relax." etc. Look, I have no problem if this was an equal-opportunity thing. But it does bug me that if the tables were turned cries of outrage would echo throughout the land.

Three fairly recent movies where Hollywood is on full after-burners:
'The Contender' (in which the President is played by a cool, liberal laid-back cat, whatthef***'s his name: his dad wore flippers, Mr. Seahunt, while Gary Oldman plays a psychotic conservative senator);
`American Beauty', say no more; and,
that one with Spiderman and that pug-faced blonde where everything becomes colorful & ecstatic when everyone starts listening to 'be-bop', doing drugs and having group sex on top of tables, etc. (OK, I'm exaggerating, a little.)
The left's ideal family: that fat comedian who hates his father, name escapes me, Louie something, as the hapless Dad; (and then came) Maude, as the Abusive Mother; Whoopie Goldberg as a wise-crackin' Big Sis, and as little bro', a middle-aged Michael Jackson, 'Li'l Mikey' gettin' jiggy wit da small children.
OK it's late, nothing to see here, let's move along.
Yep, married to a white guy. No cool minorities ever asked me out. I guess I was too conservative, even in my early 20's.
I agree.. let em dish it out. I can take it. The females and minorites should lighten up and stop being wussies.

The daughters are bummed until mom reminds the girls that they can also talk to their friends more, and the girls lighten up and walk off with the mom, leaving a rejected dad behind. I hate that commercial.
Ads like this are why God created the mute button. If I hear a commercial I have failed.

We've been watching the "Horatio Hornblower" series that A&E put out a few years back. Our county library has them all on DVD. Outstanding films. A&E's "Scarlet Pimpernel" series was good, too.
I'm talking stereotyping dark skinned black women as being gold diggers trashy when that's not what she is. It's a false stereotype. BAPS had a lot of insulting stereotypes. White Chicks was spoofing the Hilton Sisters in particular. And I hate to tell you but I laughed at the scene of them singing in the car. I laughed because that's how I sing and in my case I do listen to fluffy pop music. They also listened to hard core gangsta rap, and I don't know too many black males who listen to hard core rap.
I guess that makes you an ignorant, sexist woman that sold out here sisterhood. I hope you can live with yourself, tax-chick.

I agree. I am not surprised when some minority 'interest' group whines about something. For some reason white people whining is very unnerving to me. I wasn't raised around white people who whine, and talking about whining... Ethnic white people whine the least. I'm waiting for Growing Up Gotti to die a natural death personally :-)

Excellent point. We don't have broadcast TV, only videos/DVD, so I only see ads when we're out. These discussions on FR give me the opportunity to learn about what other people are seeing!

The latest one I saw was for OF ALL THINGS a Harley-Davidson.
Man is trying to show off to a woman who is looking at a parked V-Rod which is parked in front of some stores. The man is exposed when a woman gets on the Harley and rides off. What is the woman supposed to do? Ride off with the other woman?
It would have been more interesting if she rode off with a guy getting on the motorcycle. Sad day when even harley-davidson must succumb to the PC castration.
