I am convinced that a lot of the looting was done to raise cash for the insurgents.

It's commendable that these treasures are being returned to Iraq.

"Looting is a long-standing problem in Iraq as local people are eager for the high prices that international collectors will pay, but it has intensified in the chaos that followed the fall of Saddam Hussein, museum officials said. In Europe, some 60,000 objects are stolen each year, many from churches and museums, according to the FBI."So remember, kids: When white people take something that doesn't belong to them, it's called "stealing" and is the fault of white people. When Arabs or blacks (q.v. the Rodney King riots) take something that doesn't belong to them, it's called "looting" and is the fault of white people.

For sure. I noticed that the article didn't outright tell us when or from where the articles were supposedly 'looted'. We're sposed to assume that it's Bush's fault when the truth might be that the stuff went missing from a museum years ago, might have been been in a private collection & 'looted' from someone's house or hocked by a private collector who's out of work & strapped for cash.

oops...I missed this on the first read:
He [the marine] handed them to the FBI in Philadelphia after an archeologist confirmed their authenticity and said they had been stolen from one of Iraq's many archeological sites.

Still doesn't say when the artifacts were 'looted', nor by whom.....

True. Nor, does it really tell us 'from where', either, because we don't know the chain of custody. That the stuff (originally) came from an 'archaeological site' is a foregone conclusion (assuming the cylinders are authentic relics).

For that matter, the FBI didn't "recover" them. The marine turned them in when he realized what he had.
Just like the FBI to take credit for somebody else's ethical conduct.

Loot is a prerogative of the victor. The marine should be allowed to keep them or get the full market value...
