I am convinced that a lot of the looting was done to raise cash for the insurgents.

It's commendable that these treasures are being returned to Iraq.

"Looting is a long-standing problem in Iraq as local people are eager for the high prices that international collectors will pay, but it has intensified in the chaos that followed the fall of Saddam Hussein, museum officials said. In Europe, some 60,000 objects are stolen each year, many from churches and museums, according to the FBI."

So remember, kids: When white people take something that doesn't belong to them, it's called "stealing" and is the fault of white people. When Arabs or blacks (q.v. the Rodney King riots) take something that doesn't belong to them, it's called "looting" and is the fault of white people.

For that matter, the FBI didn't "recover" them. The marine turned them in when he realized what he had.

Just like the FBI to take credit for somebody else's ethical conduct.

Loot is a prerogative of the victor. The marine should be allowed to keep them or get the full market value...

Whatever was done, I'll bet most of it wasn't done by your average Iraqi.

And I think there ought to be a special place in Hades for the archaeolgists who kissed Saddamn's behind all those years in order to work there. A fat lot of god they did the Iraqis.
