Someone needs to tell the stoopid mofo that French fries aren't FRENCH! They are a product of our big fat country.

I thought french fries were actually first make in Belgium of all places.......either way, nothing goes good with French wine these days anyway

Actually the name French Fries is american. Pommes Fritz were invented in Paris in the 1840s, wich are of course fried potatoes. We called them French Fried potatoes and later shortened it to french fries.

They are not an american invention.

French fries did indeed originate in Belgium. The name comes from the verb "to french", meaning to cut into thin strips. You can also have frenched onions or frenched carrots.

However, the potato itself is a New World plant. Didn't even exist in Europe until the Spanish brought it back. Given that, french fries have an undeniable American character, and I always thought that American fries was a much better alternative term than the overly-jingoistic freedom fries.

Actually there Belgian , returning G.I's from WW1 ate them in France during the war & brought them bake to this country.
