Actually the name French Fries is american. Pommes Fritz were invented in Paris in the 1840s, wich are of course fried potatoes. We called them French Fried potatoes and later shortened it to french fries.

They are not an american invention.

Pommes Fritz sounds German or Austrian. Pommes frites is French. And french fried taters originated in Belgium. I forgot.
