Kerry daughter wants to run (Says she will run Boston Marathon "just like her dad.")
Boston Globe ^ | February 16, 2005 | Carol Beggy & Mark Shanahan

GOING THE DISTANCE Following in her father's footsteps, Vanessa Kerry is training to run in the Boston Marathon. John Kerry's youngest daughter is studying in London on a Fulbright scholarship, but told friends in a recent e-mail that she's training for the April race. (Her father has said he competed in the late 1970s.) In the e-mail, Kerry said she's running as part of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's marathon team and invited friends to visit the Dana-Farber website and make a donation supporting cancer research. (Among those who've responded are famous friends: singer Carole King and Al Gore's middle daughter, Kristin Gore.) Reached yesterday in Bozeman, Mont., where her mother, Julia Thorne, lives, Kerry declined to specify her reasons for running the marathon, but said that her parents, both of whom have been treated for cancer, are an inspiration. ''It's for everybody I've known who's had cancer," said the third-year Harvard Medical School student. ''It's a way for me to be involved in something positive and proactive after the election."

You scared me. I thought you meant she was gonna run for President..

Me, too! But I thought you meant she was gearing up for a senate run, followed by president later, maybe '12. Ugh.

Maybe I'll have to go this year, as a fan with a sign. Of course, some Mass state residents might not like my sign...

Only the lowest for of scum bandit a race.

Of course Kerry says he can't remember his time or the precise year he "bandited" that race.

Fullbright scholarships are not need based. They are basically post year abroad. To encourage cultural exchange. Fullbright scholars come here from other countries. Personally I would rather know about her GPA as I don't think either daughter displayed enough intelligence on the campaign trail to qualify.

As to the race if she is running as part of team, I don't think they meant she would be fully running the marathon only a leg of it for the charity.

I got this off this page:
http://www.cies.org/about_fulb.htm

The Fulbright Program, the U.S. government's flagship program in international educational exchange, was proposed to the U.S. Congress in 1945 by then freshman Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas. In the aftermath of World War II, Senator Fulbright viewed the proposed program as a much-needed vehicle for promoting "mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries of the world." His vision was approved by Congress and the program signed into law by President Truman in 1946.

Fulbright grants are made to U.S. citizens and nationals of other countries for a variety of educational activities, primarily university lecturing, advanced research, graduate study and teaching in elementary and secondary schools. Since the program’s inception, more than 250,000 participants --chosen for their leadership potential-- have had the opportunity to observe each other’s political, economic and cultural institutions.

..
...
...
The primary source of funding for the Fulbright Program is an annual appropriation made by the United States Congress to the Department of State. Participating governments and host institutions in foreign countries and in the U.S. also contribute financially through cost-sharing and indirect support, such as salary supplements, tuition waivers and university housing. The Congressional appropriation for the Fulbright Program in fiscal year 2001 was $118.7 million. Foreign governments, through their binational commissions or foundations, contributed an additional $28 million directly to the Fulbright Program.

I still think the junior senator should have paid her way.

Back at you, does a rich person "need" to collect the Social Security check they earned? They are still entitled.

Many scholarships are earned by the student's achievemnets, not "granted" by need. I believe that in the case of the Fulbright, 'need' is not in the criteria.

While it may look unseemly, I can't fault it on that basis.

OTOH, if her position/name "earned it, then it is an obscenity. Somehow, I can't picture her as a "scholar".

She doesn't seem too bright but wasn't Bubba was a Rhodes Scholar.

One could argue this is where we went wrong funding a program of malcontents and America haters:

"Senator Fulbright viewed the proposed program as a much-needed vehicle for promoting "mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries of the world."

How did Kerry run a marathon with all that shrapnel in him?

I had thought stories of Kerry's lies were over, but since I found this thread, here goes:

Kerry is unable to recount any details about the Boston Marathon he said he ran, not even the exact year. The four marathons around the time span when he SAID he ran were all very memorable; one year was unually hot, one year was unusally cold, one year there was a near tie for first place and I think there was a big cheating scandle the other year. For him not to be able to say, "I ran during the hot year" or "the year the cheater got caught" is almost proof that he is b.s.ing.

I was thumbing through the letters section of an old Field & Stream magazine. One of the writers was making the claim that Kerry was b.s.ing in a F&S interview he had given earlier because he couldn't remember details of the biggest deer he had claimed he had shot. He said something like "it was probably a 7 or 9 pointer." The writer was saying that any hunter would know for sure, that Kerry was just trying to make up some hunting experience on the spot.

Found this on the Fulbright Scholar Program website: "The primary source of funding for the Fulbright Program is an annual appropriation made by the United States Congress to the Department of State."

Kind of funny isn't it that the daughter of a Senator would be eligible to participate in a program her father votes to fund?

Here is the URL for the Fulbright Scholar Program:

Yeah, since Vanessa's family can afford any school she wants.

I agree with you there. What I question is if she received special treatment to be chosen. After listening to both girls I have a feeling that someone more deserving was pushed aside so the Senator's daughter could become a Fullbright scholar. You have to remember that this is the one that drew all over herself like an 8 year old and was trying to play baseball in a pair of heels. Stupid is as Stupid does.

You scared me. I thought you meant she was gonna run for President...

She's too young. But her stepbrother has talked about running for the House of Representives from Pennslyvania:

He's inherited the former Mrs. Kerry's (now Mrs. Heinz again) mouth.

Read below as he laments about the too-powerful Jewish lobby while he calls our president "a cokehead."

Kerry Step-son: Jewish Lobby Too Powerful

For the most part, he got away with those comments, since they were published the weekend before election day.
