Second Anti-War Effigy Torn Down

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A Sacramento homeowner's latest anti-war effigy has been torn down.

Stephen and Virginia Pearcy put a soldier's uniform with words "Bush lied, I died" on their Land Park home over the weekend, but by late Monday afternoon the display had been ripped down, leaving only the soldier's glove.

Also, a sticker from President George W. Bush's campaign had been put on the front window of the home.

The Pearcy's home has been at the center of a debate over the right to free speech since the first anti-war effigy appeared on the house. The first display included the uniform of a soldier with a noose around its neck and a sign that read "your tax dollars at work."

The national organization "Move America Forward" is planning a candlelight vigil outside the home Tuesday night to protest the effigy.

What is the difference between invading a country and bombing it?

They should have called it an art display. Then they could have gotten the NEA to pay for it.

Agreed - there's no prohibition on showing the world what an idiot you are.

But if it were some message deemed "anti-Islam" or "anti-gay" or some other "politically incorrect" message, no doubt the hate crimes crowd would have this couple in jail already.

As it is, this anti-American display gives those of a certain bent the chance to beat their breasts over "defending unpopular speech."

I just want the same rules to apply to everyone.

I was listening to the Kim Peterson show on WGST in Atlanta last week, and a caller who used to live in Nutsackremento said that once the likes of Reagan and Rush moved out of the area this is happening in, the place went into the left-wing crapper fairly quickly.

These people have a free speech right to voice their opinions but they have to be adult enough to face up to the consequences of that speech. We all have a right of free speech but we do not have a right to be heard. I think if the local owners of business in town were offended they should apply their right of reusing service to this couple.

Whenever you refer to "Matthews", it should be as "Chrissy Matthews"; it's a rule here on FR :)

Isn't the Pearcy's act the same as putting a "Kick Me" sign on your back?

you have your 1st amendment rights but others also have the right to voice their amendment against yours so the pissing contest will last a long time.

I heard a girl call in on the Armstrong and Getty show yesterday. She said that she and a few other girls had rented out the Pearcy home last year while they were going to college.

She said they had a Bush/Cheney sign that they had made hanging in the window before the election and Pearcy told them they had to take it down. Then she said he hung either an Iraqi or Palestinian flag from the house that they didn't want.

She went to take a picture of it and he threatened her with a lawsuit. Then she told him that she didn't think she could be sued for photography!

The girl definitely sounded credible! He kinda sounds like he might be a jerk! It's all about free speech you know... That's THEIR free speech, not YOURS!

They ended up moving out after that.

As I understand it, this display has been really bothering the neighbors in Sacramento. In addition to the distasteful display they put up, all the cars and media attention are causing a ruckus in the neighborhood. This couple doesn't mind, however, because they don't actually live in this house. They live in Berkeley (of course). I suggest we gather in front of their Berkeley house and protest where they actually live and see how they and their neighbors like it.
