Texas Republicans were spared a world of grief when Talmadge Heflin went away.
Former state Rep. Heflin, who last legislative session was chairman of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, had challenged the election of Hubert Vo to replace him this year.
He asked the Texas House to overturn election results.
State Rep. Will Hartnett, R-Dallas, who had been named a "master of discovery" to investigate the matter, reported last week that he had found "no evidence of any intentional voter fraud" that would have overturned the election result. That led Heflin to withdraw his challenge.
Although Heflin could have pursued the matter before the full House, he would have faced certain defeat or a bitter partisan wrangle. That's just what the Legislature does not need at this time, with so many critical state issues to face.
The state GOP chairman, Tina Benkiser, ungraciously declared, "Unfortunately, the real losers today are the people of House District 149 and honest Texans across the state."
That merely undercut what must have been a hard job for Hartnett, who found in favor of the Democrat rather than his former legislative colleague.
Vo might have won, but so did the Republicans
Hubert Vo is having the biggest house I have ever seen built 2 blocks from my house. This thing is a buhemouth. It must be around 15,000 sq feet, all brick constuction. I mean it is huge. For this area (Memorial dr) I would estimate it to cost aobout 10mil. He's making money somewhere.
Guys, there comes a time when challenging an election to death can blow up in your face. I think letting Vo win was probably the best thing to do.
Maybe he'll support property tax increase limits.
This sounds like what some Republicans in CA said when Loretta Sanchez defeated Robert K. Dornan in 1996.
Dornan was on his last legs anyway. That district had been trending Dem for some time. He would have gone down in 1998, even without illegal voting.
Hubert Vo, Hubert Vo...
Sounds Vietnamese to me; suppose he's connected to the Vietnamese mob just north of I-10 out on the west side?
He is Vietnamese. If you live in Houston check out his house. If you are going down Briar Forest(San Felipe) going towards the Beltway. Once you pass Gessner his house is the monster on the right 2 streets past Gessner(W Rivercrest-- 31 I believe) You can see it from the road. All red brick giant.
He's making money somewhere.
Apparently he's a hard worker and has been successful in his endeavors.
I agree. Working with minority lobbyists can be very rewarding. To be fair, working with any large lobbyist group(dem or rep)can be very rewarding. Sorry, just very sceptical of politicians with $10mil homes. I read his bio and did not notice him making a killing in the private sector.
As I said seems he has worked hard and been very successful...
