New copy-proof DVDs on the way?

Macrovision is expected to release a new DVD copy-protection technology Tuesday in hopes of substantially broadening its role in Hollywood's antipiracy effort.

The content-protection company is pointing to the failure of the copy-proofing on today's DVDs, which was broken in 1999. Courts have ordered that DVD-copying tools be taken off the market, but variations of the software remain widely available online.

The crack won't be long in coming. The real worry is the hardware protection already being put into TIVO and other players that restrict the range of media you can use. You can't use non Region 1 DVDs or use the analog out jacks other than to a monitor.

And that will be "enforced" in firmware - which can be cracked.

Will this multi-million dollar be defeated by a 69 cent Sharpie marker as the anti-copying tech put on CDs was?

Hollywood won't be happy until they develop the play-proof DVD.

Is there anyway to block the firmware upgrades and still have a fuctioning unit?

Uh huh.

Lets see.
How long will it take a bored 16 year old to crack or hack any of that?

DECESS doesn't need a stand alone DVD player, just a computer with a DVD interface, and Linux.

All they are doing is pique the interest of those like minded people.

I don't see that happening. Imagine SONY sells a few million units of brand new DVD drives and then, a shortly after, realizes there is a bug in there. What's the solution? Have them shipped back to be serviced on their site?

What's up with the DVD region stuff. I'd like a DVD of "Eric The Viking" but it's not available for region 1. Since players are available for less than $40 I suppose I could get one just for out of region DVDs.

Sure. A lot of DVD players and such aren't really intended to be field-upgradeable anyway, so it's a short step to the sort of tamper-resistant hardware that's been used in cable boxes and the like for ages now.

Region cracks are as common as dirt.

There are even hacks and codes for cracking region blocks on DVD players.

Region blocking was a bone head effort.

I think these are for the newer High Definition DVD's and also digitally transmitted movies. So yes, if you want to play the HD version of the DVD you won't be able to play it, but the standard DVD version will also be available for a while.

My money is on the 14-year old geek whose just waiting for the DVD release. He'll have it cracked before the sun goes down.

I will bookmark this. As a former technophile who's been largely left in the dust I will need all the tips I can get just to know the new developments!

Can't wait to see it cracked. Also can't wait to see faster download speeds make movies easier to download. The recording and movie industry have mistreated their customers, while the real piracy is going on in China. Copying a DVD to make a backup is legal, same as a cd. And the things are junk anyway and scratch almost immediately. If they want to try to stop people from making a backup copy, I hope they get overrun by piracy.

All of this is just leading me in the direction of building my own Home Theater PC (HTPC) system and using the DVD drive in my computer for playing and ripping my DVDs to a hard disk. This avoids the problem of buying a set top box DVD player that may or may not work with my new or old DVDs and lets me implement anything and everything that is developed software-wise to defeat the idiots in Hollywood that somehow believe they can get me to buy 5 copies of the junk they sell rather than just one.

This is nuts... I like to make DVD "mixes" for my own use, from DVDs I own, as "movie night" pre-shows (a couple of cartoons, a special feature/behind-the-scenes, and a handful of trailers) -- this type of technology makes that a real pain, and then I'd be looked on as a criminal for simply trying to use my own DVDs the way I want to.

Didn't I read something recently that TIVO is dead because the system won't work with the new HDTV's..
