I have been trying to fill 4 technical jobs for 4 months. No one, with the qualifications, seems to be looking. I know that is anecdotal but I know of many other's having the same problem all over the US.

I don't buy the "third world direction we're headed for" BS at all.

I an currently unemployed. Have been for about two weeks. My field is Network Administration. I am pleased with the prospects and this is Mississippi. There are two jobs I could take right now but I really want to work for this other company I recently inteviewed with. I should hear something this week.

My point is, over the last month, I have seen oodles of tech jobs available. Were I not so particular about what I am looking for at this point in my career, I probably could have been hired 5 times over, especially if I wanted to go back to helpdesk work.

There's the law of gravity and the law of supply and demand. You gotta supply more money and you will find techies demanding to work for you

There are just very few people who are unemployed that are willing to apply themselves to the job, and this is driving the demand to bring in people from other countries. If only we could upgrade the illegal immigrants flooding into this country to these highly trained technical positions....

The class of professional unemployed has shrunk to its lowest level ever, if you take into consideration that a lot of people are out there working on a temp basis, or are self-employed on a contract with various clients.

Not saying that these are your qualifications, but I have seen ridiculous requirements for applicants, like 10 years of Java plus 5 years of .Net experience with C/C++/COBOL, requirements that noone could ever match.

I would rather hire good technical people with solid basic technical skills. They may not have the experience on the specific technology, but I would be confident that after a week or two of ramping up, they would probably be more productive than someone who has the specific experience, but poor general technical skills.

Again, not saying that this is your case, but I have seen this too many times.

What type of jobs are these ? I know quite a few technical people I could send your way who are unemployed or underemployed.

Also, an interesting fact: as home ownership rises, the interest of people in relocating for a job drops correspondingly, so unemployment for those people lasts longer.

Questions for you:
1. Would you hire 50somethings who have been "early retired" against their wishes?
2. Have such candidates applied?
3. Where are you located (generally speaking)
4. Are you a stickler about degrees?
5. How would you characterize the candidates who have applied thus far.

My company is so cheap.....they put the 401K payments in LATE all the time to collect the interest. We the employees, just realized it was against the law, so we started making some noise and the payment was on time for the first time in a year.

I'm looking. It seems tech recruiters can't be bothered to anwer emails or return messages. They must get paid just for posting the ads.

I work for foreigners, bringing foreign money into the states. But of course once I talk all the American companies into outsourcing their IT departments to this nameless foreign company I won't have any more technical work to do. Oh well, then maybe I can concentrate on my true love, Indian style woodworking.

Hogwash! The qualified applicants are here and they are, and have been applying for the advertised positions.

If employment ads for carpenters ran like technical ads, the carpenter would have to have experience on specific brand-name hammers, saws, tape measures, squares, ladders, and saw-jacks, etc. to ever get an interview.

We're seeing the same thing here in the People's Democratic Republic of Illinois. In order to keep our project moving we've hired 3 Pakistani's, a Russian, a Bulgarian and of course, a Mexican. They all had to move to the US.

I am a software engineer and the companies just don't want to pay.

They would rather take a degree from the University of Bombay which is also a restaurant instead of Americans with practical knowledge.

Most of the best Americans I have worked with have no degrees and really hate the educational system.

I hope these companies go to India. In five years they will all be out of business.
