February 15, 2005 -- Black and Hispanic teenagers in New York state graduate from high school at roughly half the rate of white students nearly the largest disparity in the nation, a new study shows.
While the 81-percent high school graduation rate for whites in New York held steady between 1997 and 2002 the years the study examined the rates slipped to 42 percent from 47 percent for blacks and to 36 percent from 39 percent for Hispanics.
"It confirms what a lot of people have long talked about and suspected, that New York particularly serves its minority students poorly," said Jay Greene, a senior researcher at the Manhattan Institute, which will release the study today.
Only Wisconsin, where 91 percent of white students graduated, had a larger disparity between blacks and whites.
The study did not consider Asian students.
Overall, less than two-thirds of New York state's teenagers leave their high schools with a sheepskin and only half of them are qualified to apply to four-year colleges, the study shows.
The state's 64-percent graduation rate a 3-point drop from a decade earlier places New York 40th out of 50 states.

Typical liberal spin..blame the "man" not the failed parents. Good to see so many across the nation seeing this lie for what it is. Keep the red states going!!!
Their married parents are thrilled? Odds of two black girls having married parents are about two to one against.
The educational problems referenced in the article flow directly from the huge OOW births in the black population. They have reduced it to near criminal, near poverty status everywhere.
In 1960 the OOW birth rate for blacks was similiar to that of whites, less than 20%. Now, thanks to the welfare system's explosion, it is 75-80% which means disaster for everyone including those of us who are not black since we will be paying the costs of such irresponsibility. On the bright side though it keeps employment in the prison industry very high.
Good call, kudos.
No the root cause is OOW births.
If it had, it would likely have found that their graduation rate is equal to or even higher than whites, and investigation of the reasons why would reveal the overriding importance of stable two-parent family life and the expectations of the parents in academic success. School spending is important, but secondary to the above.
The OOW birth rate for Asians is less than that of whites and a fraction of that for Blacks and Hispanics.
you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him/her learn...
A statistic we really need to look at is how many kids are currently in school and how many are actually graduating? The kids in school today are the same ones who will be supporting us boomers in retirement. Here in CA it don't look too promising.
It really amazes me that the number who graduate high school is so low. Most people I bring this up with have not idea the rates are so high. But no need to worry, there's always welfare checks waiting for them...
Oh, we don't want to break it down into one and two parent families. After all, you should be well aware if you watch TV that single moms are the best parents one can have! (do we have a sarcasm icon?)

Asians are not minorities in this type of study. A lot depends on what liberal myth you are trying to sell. Of course when asians are promoted to management then they do count as minorities.
At any rate, graduation rates show only how much graduation matters. In todays high schools, it takes a great deal of EFFORT in order to not graduate. You have to cuss out liberal teachers who are only too happy to give you a grade, then you have to totally ignor classes where questions simlar to graduation exam test questions are reviewed. And you have to forget that you can remember 200 plays in a play book but can't remember 20 facts to pass a test. You also need to simply hang out somewhere else for a lot of time. Graduation standards are so low that a motivated fifth grader could pass them, I think minorities need to take a little responsibility for this one.
Now if you want to criticise the schools for not preparing more kids for college I could agree with this.
Bill Cosby was right (at least on his comments about the crisis in the black family).

I'd be willing to bet this has something to do with this.
In high school, my girlfriend's best friends were two Asian sisters. These three girls were the top three graduates in the class.
We were hardly ever allowed at their house during weekday afternoons. Not only did they study schoolwork, their Dad and Mom spent a lot of time with them just doing family stuff.
That is why Asians are not figured here. Because people know. The article and people quoted in it are liars. They know the answer to this problem, it's just not a politically correct answer so it is dismissed.
Bingo. This whole article is probably timed to go along with the judge ordering more money for NYS schools.
Well they need to study more and shoot hoops and Hip Hop less.
I disagree. There are plenty of successful one parent families - the difference is, the one parent has to have the same attitude about hard work, family life, and school success as the two-parent family.
