A celebration was held at Golden Plains Nursing Home for Sarah Scantlin. Shes essentially been asleep for 20 years, but now shes awake and talking.
I think its truly a miracle, that she hasnt been able to communicate at all for 20 years and shes talking, says Dr. Bradley Scheel, Sarahs doctor.
Hi, says Sarah Scantlin.
Many times Ive had to pretend that Sarah wasnt around, because I couldnt take anymore, says Sarahs father, Jim Scantlin.
You kind of just resign yourself to thats the way life is, says Jim Scantlin, Jr., Sarahs brother.
Twenty years ago, Sarah Scantlin was 18. A drunk driver hit her. She suffered significant trauma and was in a coma for about two weeks.
Since then, shes been unable to communicate, but all that has changed now.
She still has significant disabilities and has a long ways to go, but this is a very miraculous turn of events, Scheel says.
For Sarahs parents, this is the greatest gift they couldve received.
I love you, says Sarah.
Sarah will undergo speech therapy. It appears during that 20 years Sarah was aware of what was going on around her, her brother apparently asked her sometime this past couple of weeks what a CD was, and she explained that it was something that played music.
It's a great story. However, CDs were starting to come out at the time this woman was hit. (I'm the same age as her and remember first noting them, during my first semester of college.)
That is a wonderful gift!
Too bad Terri Schiavo isn't allowed to celebrate Valentine's Day. Instead of celebrating her life, her estranged husband is busy making plans to have her exterminated. Maybe Sarah's story will somehow help Terri.
My sentiments exactly.

I would think that maybe the brother did not know if CDs were out when she got hurt.

One of the reasons that I posted this was because it reminded me of Terri. I am still praying for her.
Thanks for the ping, BB!
