A celebration was held at Golden Plains Nursing Home for Sarah Scantlin. She’s essentially been asleep for 20 years, but now she’s awake and talking.

“I think it’s truly a miracle, that she hasn’t been able to communicate at all for 20 years and she’s talking,” says Dr. Bradley Scheel, Sarah’s doctor.

“Hi,” says Sarah Scantlin.

“Many times I’ve had to pretend that Sarah wasn’t around, because I couldn’t take anymore,” says Sarah’s father, Jim Scantlin.

“You kind of just resign yourself to that’s the way life is,” says Jim Scantlin, Jr., Sarah’s brother.

Twenty years ago, Sarah Scantlin was 18. A drunk driver hit her. She suffered significant trauma and was in a coma for about two weeks.

Since then, she’s been unable to communicate, but all that has changed now.

“She still has significant disabilities and has a long ways to go, but this is a very miraculous turn of events,” Scheel says.

For Sarah’s parents, this is the greatest gift they could’ve received.

“I love you,” says Sarah.

Sarah will undergo speech therapy. It appears during that 20 years Sarah was aware of what was going on around her, her brother apparently asked her sometime this past couple of weeks what a CD was, and she explained that it was something that played music.

What a Valentine's gift this must be for her parents and other family members.

It's a great story. However, CDs were starting to come out at the time this woman was hit. (I'm the same age as her and remember first noting them, during my first semester of college.)

That is a wonderful gift!

Too bad Terri Schiavo isn't allowed to celebrate Valentine's Day. Instead of celebrating her life, her estranged husband is busy making plans to have her exterminated. Maybe Sarah's story will somehow help Terri.

I would think that maybe the brother did not know if CDs were out when she got hurt.

One of the reasons that I posted this was because it reminded me of Terri. I am still praying for her.
