Dog Praised For Waking Women During Fire
POSTED: 2:26 pm EST February 14, 2005

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Firefighters in Greensboro are praising a dog for alerting two women to a fire in their home early Monday morning.

Authorities said Rebecca Hanlin and Dorcas Ellis were asleep when the dog, named Bam, began barking constantly. The barking awakened the women and alerted them to the fire, allowing them to leave the house without harm.

"If he wouldn't have woke me up, I wouldn't be here," Hanlin told WXII 12 News. "I'm pretty sure of that."

The fire started at about 4:40 a.m. at the residence on Clifton Road.

Hanlin initially thought someone was breaking into her house. She ran upstairs to check on her aunt, and when she came back down she realized why Bam was barking.

"When I came downstairs my room had pretty much filled up with smoke," she said, "because it kind of hit my face as I was going out the door."

Firefighters found the dog unconscious on the second floor of the home, but they managed to get him out and resuscitate him.

Veterinarian Brooke Schwabenton said Bam is suffering from smoke and mucus in his lungs.

"He's not out of the woods, but he is doing pretty well for what he went through," Schwabenton said. "So we'll keep a close eye on him."

It's believed an electrical failure in a panel box located in the laundry room may have sparked the fire.

Yes! SCARLETT! Thank You! I couldn't remember her name.

Poor little thing, she was willing to do what ever it took to save her babies. It's good to know she got her hair back.

I love both dog's and cat's. We have three dogs, all black labs, and right now (because we had babies) seven cat's. LOL!

There were 2 Peteys.....The makeup guy forgot which eye had the ring around it and he put it on the opposite side on the new Petey.

The dood (or doodette) did one job for years and had a 50/50 shot on the new hound? Sounds kinda like an urban myth...

That was the cat that finished a NYT cross word puzzle while the fire fighters were coming to their rescue, wasn't it?

Come now, cats can't do crosswords--just word searches. ; )

It was on Animal Planet's Amazing Rescues or some such program. 911 has a tape of the "call", which consists of insistent meows. The cat must've hit the phone off the hook and then a speed-dial button or the appropriate numbers--a miracle however it happened.

I sent it. The head looked like a pit to me too.

You can bet if that dog had bitten someone it would be called a pit.

Have you ever read Vicki Hearne, "Bandit, Dossier of a Dangerous Dog." She rescued a pit from "death row" and wrote about media prejudice against the breed. She was a dog trainer who was trained by the late great William Koehler. His training books are terrific.

Letter sent - thanks for the great idea!

"I noticed this story on Valentine's Day, and I also noticed that the dog is clearly a Pit Bull, at least part. In light of all the negative press normally bestowed upon the breed, I would appreciate the recognition of "Pit Bull" in this story. Lord knows, if he had bitten the women instead of saving them, you would have lead with "Pit Bull Mauls Owner" or some such.

I realize Pit Bulls, in fact all large breed dogs can be dangerous, but fair and balanced reporting of the honorable and gracious acts associated with the breed would really help alleviate the fear of ALL of these animals...some are very kind and gentle, despite their breed's reputation.

Thank you so much for your attention to this matter."

I agree this is a pit bull or pit bull mix. I also agree that had the dog bit someone instead of heroically saving his peoples' lives, it would have been a big "pit bull mauls {insert}" story.

And they are so right. My dog never cusses.

I haven't read it.
I googled it and it looks like a good read.
Next time I'm in the bookstore I'll ask for it.

Not like there's any evidence backing that up or anything... (/sarcasm).

He would have even put the fire out if the cat living with him would've helped. Puss said he was afraid of water.

Sorry for my late response, but did the station report that Bam was a Pit bull. I am quite positive that he has a lot of Pit bull in him. He looks like he is a purebreed from the small picture I saw. The media never mentions that it was a Pit bull when they do something heroic like this, and I have seen numerous examples to back up my point. It it was a Collie the reporters probably wouldn't be able to shut up about the fact that it was a Collie. Pit bulls are great dogs, and this is an excellent example of their loyalty and love for people.

Cats can be quite heroic at times. One cat fought off a burglar one time. They can be quite tough when they want to be. Don't knock cats. Cats and dogs are both great pets.
